Montana chickens

We use straw bales like that for the greenhouse. Never thought of it for the chickens. duh. Also, if you spread steer manure on the bales and water them the poop will heat up. I wouldn't do that in the summer inside a hen house tho. We are in Southwest Montana near the tobacco root mts., Whitehall. Just a skip and a jump from highmountainchick in Helena. In Montana the weather can change within minutes. Yesterday the wind kicked up suddenly and within a few minutes we had thunder lightening and a pretty good rain. For about 8 minutes then the sun came out again. I live in sort of a valley, but we are still at 4,000 ft. Just a few miles from the continental divide.

WATER? you must be kidding. There are so many rivers here. Jefferson, Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Yellowstone....and those are only the main rivers. The creeks and streams are abundant as well. In the winter, the creek overflows from the beaver dams. This is what the kids do....oops, nothings will upload. They ice skate out on the bog. And talk about sitting on the porch doin nothin...well the picture won't upload. But he sits in front of the chicken house with a upside down bucket (table) a beer, the phone, a radio and makes chicken sounds. I worry about him sometimes.

Remember Little House on the Prairie? Sidney Greenbush, little Carrie, earned her pro rodeo permit.

That is way toooooo funny!

I'm glad to hear bout the water....son was worried about water rights and such. We had heard a lot of places out west was range with few water rights.

Everyone around here is on well water. Ranchers water 24/7 and have 3 to 4 cuts of hay each year. Our well is 17 ft deep at the house. 4 ft at the back 5 acres we have a natural pond. All we have is an electric bill. Hen house in the winter, water pump, computer/tv, we use wood to heat with and propane to cook with. Wood for the stove comes really cheap, get a wood permit for $28. There's enough dead and down all you need us a chain saw. Our propane was about $100 and should last about 3 years since we don't use it for heat. I figure we spend more on chicken feed than any other utility

. Our electric bill was $60 this month. No water bill, no gas bill, no trash bill (dump is free). It's awsome. If you like fish, they jump right out of the water in the pond outside of town. Catching the bugs. This place is amazing. Few people have chickens. I had a dentist appt. It was cancelled cos the docs sheep got out. For real!

question....how long does it take for my chickens eggs to get bigger than sparrow eggs. They're cute, but come on.....

Hello to you too chickenchick.

Free dump? That is too cool! And I really must live where the dentist has to cancel for sheep. Move over gals, I'm coming on out! Sounds like my kind of life....

Its sort of like that here but not to the degree that you have it. I just knew Montana was a good choice. They don't give permits to cut firewood anymore here.
