We use straw bales like that for the greenhouse. Never thought of it for the chickens. duh. Also, if you spread steer manure on the bales and water them the poop will heat up. I wouldn't do that in the summer inside a hen house tho. We are in Southwest Montana near the tobacco root mts., Whitehall. Just a skip and a jump from highmountainchick in Helena. In Montana the weather can change within minutes. Yesterday the wind kicked up suddenly and within a few minutes we had thunder lightening and a pretty good rain. For about 8 minutes then the sun came out again. I live in sort of a valley, but we are still at 4,000 ft. Just a few miles from the continental divide.
WATER? you must be kidding. There are so many rivers here. Jefferson, Madison, Gallatin, Missouri, Yellowstone....and those are only the main rivers. The creeks and streams are abundant as well. In the winter, the creek overflows from the beaver dams. This is what the kids do....oops, nothings will upload. They ice skate out on the bog. And talk about sitting on the porch doin nothin...well the picture won't upload. But he sits in front of the chicken house with a upside down bucket (table) a beer, the phone, a radio and makes chicken sounds. I worry about him sometimes.
Remember Little House on the Prairie? Sidney Greenbush, little Carrie, earned her pro rodeo permit.
