I wonder why mdbokc's recipe calls for 2 Tablespoons of dissolved alum. I have no clue what that would be needed for. A binding agent?

I have all the ingredients except alum. I suppose I would get it in a drugstore, like Walgreen's or CVS.

Isn't alum a spice? I don't know why it would be needed either. A binder would be the dish soap....

Alum is a bitter/sour substance. It's what makes your mouth pucker when you eat pickles.
