By "cull" I mean "pull from my breeding pen".
This lot finally got old enough to sex and I have been selling them off since spring. I ended up keeping the two best hens and sold the rest. I have one set left that is to go to a local friend. This year's hatch actually started coming out this week. YAY!
There are those that eat silkie. They say it tastes like chicken.
I don't eat any of my roosters (silkie or not), but only because I'm a wuss). You might try doing a search on here for eating silkie. I think Purplechicken did a thread on it some time back.
My first silkies were hatchery silkies and they lived in the same pen as the large fowl. It wasn't a problem until the roosters got big enough to do the deed. The poor silkies were getting beat up. I ended up making a seperate banty pen for all of my banties. The buff silkies get their own pen since they are a breeding program. I need to make sure I am only getting buff eggs when I collect. But, the silkie hens seem to do perfectly well with other hens, large fowl or bantam.
You totally should get some silkies. They are sweeter than you can even imagine. I was just out there doing morning chores and took a moment to sit with the chickies. One of the silkies came up and stood at my feet until I picked her up. She snuggled down on my lap and made happy chicken noises as I pet her. Sweet!! You definitely should get at least two. Of course, once you get your first you will eventually get more. It's part of the Silkie Plan for World Domination.
