More buff silkie babies!

By "cull" I mean "pull from my breeding pen".

This lot finally got old enough to sex and I have been selling them off since spring. I ended up keeping the two best hens and sold the rest. I have one set left that is to go to a local friend. This year's hatch actually started coming out this week. YAY!

There are those that eat silkie. They say it tastes like chicken.

I don't eat any of my roosters (silkie or not), but only because I'm a wuss). You might try doing a search on here for eating silkie. I think Purplechicken did a thread on it some time back.

My first silkies were hatchery silkies and they lived in the same pen as the large fowl. It wasn't a problem until the roosters got big enough to do the deed. The poor silkies were getting beat up. I ended up making a seperate banty pen for all of my banties. The buff silkies get their own pen since they are a breeding program. I need to make sure I am only getting buff eggs when I collect. But, the silkie hens seem to do perfectly well with other hens, large fowl or bantam.

You totally should get some silkies. They are sweeter than you can even imagine. I was just out there doing morning chores and took a moment to sit with the chickies. One of the silkies came up and stood at my feet until I picked her up. She snuggled down on my lap and made happy chicken noises as I pet her. Sweet!! You definitely should get at least two. Of course, once you get your first you will eventually get more. It's part of the Silkie Plan for World Domination.

Thanks! My original chicks came from Jack Ferguson from Knoxville. He has amazing birds and I feel very fortunate to have some from his line. He has done a lot of work on the line. I feel like I'm riding his coat tails for sure.
The smaller ones are from my breedings. They are starting out nicely. I already see some that will be culls, but there are a couple that are quite nice. We shall see what happens in a couple of months.

Hi

Will do. I have sold all of last year's hatch already. This year's is hatching right now. I should start selling them next spring. I generally post them in the BYC sell section.

Middle TN pretty much has your silkie needs covered.

Have you been over on the Middle TN thread? That one goes so fast I can't always keep up with who is chatting in there.

Post what you are looking for and someone local will have it. I will certainly be ready to sell some next spring. They will range between pet quality all the way up to show and breeder quality. As long as you are building you might as well go ahead and build yourself a silkie pen. Once you get those first two you are gonna want more. They are like potato chips.

They are they are like potato chips! I don't even have ONE silkie, and I already want a whole big flock of the silly fuzzy butts.
