With 4 nest boxes I don't see why you are limiting yourself to just 2 more birds...

I would vote Silkies because they are actually very useful as well as cute. They make great broodies and I understand the roos are a very exotic gourmet treat if you butcher them.

I also LOVE Old English Game Bantams! They are my all time favorite breed for just plain old good personality and self-reliant nature. They also come in a rainbow of colors and feather patterns.

Normally they will just lay their egg and walk away if they are not broody.

Even then, they will accumulate several eggs over the course of a few days before they begin to incubate them.

If I had a broody hen who did not want to get off her eggs I would leave her alone. You wouldn't want to eat those eggs anyway.

Ooooo - your grumpy guss is SOOO totally on board with the chicken thing now. That rocks! And once you start getting eggs - he will simply swoon to increase your numbers. That is how it happened with my husband.

I am fairly certain, being that chickens are social creatures, that they actually Prefer to share their nest boxes and have multiple hens laying in one box. So, to fulfill them as a species you need to reach that 4-5 per nest box. Yup, pretty sure that is how it works.
