More humane to cull? More humane to live?

honestly it may be better to cull. Think about it as if it were a baby. You wouldn’t want your baby to live out the rest of its life constantly starving

The chick does not have a good quality of life. People cull chickens for much less than a deformity--too many, bad temper, etc. Hard as it is, I would cull this one.
i agree, hard as it is i would cull.

You'll always get equal amounts of people saying 'dont cull!' to 'Cull!'
It's up to you really.
If it were me then I'd certainly have offed it by now. Not fair on the hen is my thinking.
My father and have a method of peacefully uthanizing sick animals on the farm since the 1950s.We have an old clothes trunk with a hole drilled in to accept a 15 foot garden hose. The hose is placed in the exhaust pipe of a car or truck.Warm the engine first so there will be less oil and smoke fumes.what comes out of the long hose is a cool ,oderless carbon monoxide gas that will put the animal to sleep in minutes.Problem is this doesn't work with a modern catalytic equipped vehicle.I still use my 63 t bird for this job and it works perfectly! I will not use a modern car as this will choke them to death, cut theyre heads off( a preferred method)freeze them(uggg!), or try and break there necks! I know it's a tough conversation...

I would not use freezing to euthanize an animal.

From what I have read, it's "easy" for the person because they don't see what's happening, but it's not pleasant or peaceful for the bird (or fish or other creature.)

Yes,I think that is cruel,I won't shoot them either.Just for the record-anything other than terminal fowl(cats, dogs)are brought to a vet and I hold them during the process!

Yes. I have used the exhaust method before.
It's works very well with little to no stress for the bird. As you said, modern cars will not have the same effect that you're after.

I like giving my animals every chance they got. I have a deaf dog, a pool rescued snapping turtle, and a VERY lame but not in pain chicken, whose right leg is completely behind her body. If she is smaller then the other’s than she is hungry so therefore she is in pain. I watch my lame chicken very closely to see if she is doing well and not in pain. In this case I would but her down. I know it’s so sad but it’s honestly cruel not to. 😞😔 If you have an animal that is in pain and not getting better than the right thing to do is to put them down. Like I said it’s very sad but if you truly love the animal then you will put them down.

One thing I always keep in my mind is that animals will instinctively hide their pain to protect themselves from predators.I once rescued a guinea from a accident where her whole flock was killed in the road. As I was pulling dead birds out of the street she came to from being knocked out! I put her in my truck and brought her home where I put her in a separate pen and nursed her back to health. All she had was a bad limp so I named her Ginny(the gimpy guinea!) I got her a couple of mates and she lived with my chickens for a few years but never stopped calling for her original flock! She was beholden to me for saving her life and would often run up to me and just crouch down submissively as if she was thanking me!! Then she got very mean, started turning on the other chickens, keeping them away from their food and water and constantly harassing them. Took me awhile to figure this out. When it got to the point where I had to put down 2 of my layers from prolapse vents (thats another nightmare!)due to Ginny pecking at their butts while they're trying to lay eggs it was time for a tough call. Winter was here, there was only one pen at the time, and if I separated her from the flock she would just go koo-koo!! I put her down for the good of the flock-tore my heart out and was miserable for a week.Shes resting under a crabapple tree out back with a few other hens and a few cats!
