We go through about 50 lbs every week and a half. That's for 2 grown Danes. Then we add fresh eggs and raw meats and veggies to that as well.

The harlequin carry the merle gene. But there can be issues with merles, especially if they get the double-merle gene which is pretty much fatal. I would NEVER breed a merle Dane...there are too many things that could go wrong. Blue harlequin is random...a throwback I guess. I don't know how you would breed to get just Blue Harlequins. But since I have a Blue female and a male Harlequin, if we were to ever breed them again(which I doubt), we would hopefully end up with more blue harlequins!!!!

That was a long post.

ParkerVA-They'll be up tomorrow!!! They all need baths and I need my hubby's help to do that!!!

Holy shnikey that's alot of food.

I just learned about the double-merle stuff in Aussies. It's very interesting stuff. Now I know why our Cookie was deaf. The stupid breeder didn't. I wonder how many deaf pups it took before she learned why that happened.

Harlequin is a variation of merle, it just has something alittle extra that changes it to harl. Breeding a harl (as far as the merle gene goes) is no different then breeding merle.

Blue is recessive, so it can hide, both parents have to carry it to pass it. So if you breed blue to blue you will get only blue. If one parent is also harlequin then yes you can get blue harls and blue merles (although you'd also get solid blue and mantle blue). If you bred a blue or blue mantle to a double merle that is also blue harl, that would be the only way to get only blue harl and merle (blue merle).

There is nothing at all wrong w/ a single merle, whether it be regular merle, harl, fawn merle, etc.

Double merles do tend to have problems w/ their ears and eyes (most double merle danes are deaf, double merle aussies tend to have more trouble w/ their sight). Merle can come in different forms, there is the most recognized which is merle on black, but you can also get fawn merle, blue merle, brindle merle, etc. Not to mention Harl and all it's variations. You get double merle breeding any merle variation to another merle variation. Merle x merle, harl x harl, or merle x harl.

I found my Bella here, on this thread, over 9 years ago. She developed cancer and had to be put to sleep yesterday. In hopes that the original poster, and the person who raised her might see this, thank you for giving me my best friend. She was amazing, beautiful and everything I ever dreamed of.
