More sick birds. *Necropsy Report!* (Now with IC, swollen eye...)

The discloration (skin) you took photos of was too far away to really examine it closely thru the photographs... just too far away to see anything except discoloration.
Look under the wings and see if that same discoloration is in that area please.

I called the cell phone of the poultry director and she was so nice. She told me where to take a dead or dying bird to get a necropsy done, and she also told me the name and number of the county extension poultry vet to call on Monday. She said he will not charge more than $10, if that. I feel much better now, but still heartbroken that my birds are so sick.

She also told me that IB and other respiratory diseases have an incubation period of 10-15 days, so if at all possible to isolate the sick birds and disinfect the coop. I'm going to try to isolate the sick ones in the chicken tractor and then clean out my coop. How should I go about disinfecting the run? It has sand in the bottom but it's very thin so there would be no way to scrape it all out. Do you think it would be alright to mist it with bleach water then put clean sand on top?

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but in the second picture the blurry feather in the middle of the black circle is where it rises to a point, it's like a mountain of black crust.

It is under the edge of the wing, on the back of the bird. It's covered by feathers, you have to part the feathers to find it. The other wing area looks fine, and the skin everywhere else looks normal.

That's very strange....maybe it's caused by parasites???(don't take my advise LOL I don't really know what to tell you)

I would do as some people said. Bring her to the vet and let em take a look at it. Poor chickens.

Then sterilize the coop/run somehow. I don't know much at all about this, sorry!

P.S. in Picture #1, what are those small holes in the black crust stuff?

It looks like that is where feathers were pulled out or maybe something else.....?

I saw those holes too, I have no idea what they are. She isn't missing any feathers on her body other than this strange spot, which is hidden. None of her feathers are ragged, she appears clean. I don't think anyone is pecking her or anything like that.

oohmy!..i dont know what it is..but it looks painful!..i would bet there is a deep wound/abcess under that scab thing..but i'm not sure...dlhunicorn will be able to help you more when she sees it..shes very informed on this kind of thing...i hope she sees this agaiin....heres a bump up...best wishes, Wendy

It looks like her skin is gangrenous...it's dead...
I don't think it has anything to do with the snotty nose things, though...
I'm sorry for your losses.

yes it does look gangrenous doesn't it (... I am not at all "diagnosing" here just thinking out loud hoping to be of some help while you await the results of the necropsy> a necropsy is the only way to know for sure what has caused this particular birds death) and this is why I asked because when I saw that first pic I thought of this:

...altho this might be an isolated incident from a bite or such from this particular bird (perhaps from a bite or such?) I would not take any risks and do a heavy duty cleaning out and disinfection of that coop (and if it were me I would completely remove that layer of sand and replace with new > bleach becomes ineffective when in contact with soil/sand as do most disinfectants which is why my floors are raised and runs are paved.) so sorry you are going thru this but I am glad you finally got the state vets contact information.
