More sick birds. *Necropsy Report!* (Now with IC, swollen eye...)

I'm so sorry this is happening.

I had a frizzel that had something like that on it's back. Peter Brown said it looked like a spider bite might have caused it. Also did you inject any meds their or near their. Tylan can sometimes cause darking of the skin in injected spots but injections sites can also abscess if stuff gets infected. For respiratory illness I would get some baytril. You can order it through allbirdproducts w/o an RX in liquid form. It comes in a dropper bottle and instead of mixing it in water my vet said to give a few drops in the mouth. That normally helps alot. You can also find a used nebulizer and hook it up to a clear plastic box w/ lid that your bird can fit in a little snuggly. You can put the Tylan mixed with a little saline in the cup of the nebulizer and put the bird in the box. It will mist the tylan and the bird will breath it in where it needs it, in the lungs. I found one for $20 on cragislist. This is simuliar to what vets use.

Well both birds are still alive this morning. The white ameraucana was eating and drinking a little! The BLRW with the sore (yes it's under the wing) is sleepy but also randomly walking around and pecking the ground like normal. I've never injected the BLRW before until yesterday, so that wound couldn't have been from me. Maybe it is a spider bite. Yuck!! I wish there was some way to tell how long it's been there, I'm still not able to believe we didn't notice it before. My toddler holds this bird all the time. It eats from our hands and we admire its super soft feathers...that sore is well hidden! It doesn't seem to be in any pain, I touched the spot and poked it, and the bird didn't react. Do you think I should put anything on it? Like (un)petroleum Vaseline or triple antibiotic ointment? There is a little part on the edge that looks oozy and bloody, but the black part is dried up and hard. I noticed yesterday that the bird had a few raised leg scales like the start of scaly leg mites, so I lubed her legs up. It couldn't be related could it?

The nebulizer is a good idea! I can't afford one right now but I'll keep an eye out for a used one for future use. I also need to order some Baytril to keep on hand, and that Avian charge stuff too. I wish money grew on trees.

I've seen a lot of brown recluse spider bites and these pics remind me of that. Bite area can become necrotic in 24 hours. Black necrotic tissue only adds to the difficulty of healing by restricing blood flow for tissue repair and or antibiotic accessability.

No cockerel, but one of the other birds I got from this same guy a few months ago had roosters in with some of the birds. One hen I got from him had no tail feathers at all thanks to the rooster. It's possible this one could have been pecked, though it was just feathered out and small then.

I don't think we have brown recluse spiders in Kentucky? But we do have black widows on our property.

ew...ya PeeperKeeper you may be right. I looked up pictures of brown recluse spider bites and it does look similar in many ways.

I never knew a spider could cause so much damage...

I hope your chickens get better!

But I'm glad that she seems to not feel any pain.
