The lunchboxes possibly had trace amounts of lead, but didn't contain harmful amounts of the metal. Its not like they had a bunch of fishing sinkers rolling around in them. I did a little research into this when it broke and found it to be another one of those Californified issues. In essence, goofball alarmists got ahold of something and ran with it. I guess they figured the the truth was boring, and it was more interesting to clutch onto the more colorful suppositions.
I shudder to think what they would find if they could examine the old Felix The Cat lunchbox I had when I was a kid!
