Morel Mushroom and other hunters gather here!

They grow on old decaying trees also known as dryads saddle (spelling might be wrong). Back when I can remember hunting at a secret spot there were tons of them, but it seems like people got smarter and smarter about them. I'm lucky to even get ONE a year. We find more morels then pheasants backs now!

I wish I could find ANY mushroom where I'm living now in the high desert. I can remember last year I was anxiously waiting for morels to start popping. I started looking in late March in northern Illinois..but nothing! I kept looking and even searched in our 2009 spot but no luck. I hope you guys get good hauls this year.

Been going mushrooming since i was a kid here in Indiana. find the early blacks and grays more in Parke co. than Warren. Here are some late yellow sponges I found all in one area. brought them home in a pillow case. my Dad taught me to hunt with one so you do not break the mushrooms while carrying them home. I sell them, eat some and even give to my special friends....

Here is a picture of a false morel,i eat these, have for years.Believe me i've heard from all kinds of people not to eat them but i have never had any ill effects,my father and grand father ate them to.Around here we call them elephant ears.

The elephant ears are found here in In. also. My family and I never ate them.

Some of my mushroom customers would request them and the little goosenecks. They have a tall thin stem with a dark cap on them. Attack chicken we never tried the white things growing on trees.

Anyone eat the puff balls? You can find them growing out in pastures and they are round, white and spongy. When they mature you can step on them and they give off a dark powder, hence puff balls!

Just for entertainment we use the point system while mushrooming.

Find a turtle, worth 10 points.

A snake of any kind is 25 points.

Spotting a wild turkey is 50 and a fox or coyote is 75 points.

Hiding behind tree when on someone else's property, priceless!

I intend on getting out there and looking as rumour has it there are a few great spots around my property....cannot WAIT!

Lilchick thats priceless!

I've tried puffballs before and they weren't bad but I'd take pheasants backs over them lol.

When fresh cut pheasants backs smell like watermelon rind. Not all fallen/decaying trees have them though. It's getting harder and harder to find them around here

Heres a few we found last year in one trip. I believe it was still early though

BTW how much do you sell them for? I might be interested in buying a few

We only found maybe 2 good dinners last year.

I usually sell a quart bag for 20.00/ approx. 1/2 lb. in them depending on how wet they are. I hear some go for over 75.00 a lb. but that is crazy...

My hubby works at a local bank in Danville Illinois and he takes my extras to work and they are gone before he even gets to his desk! Not very good hunting over there in illinois on the flatlands...

Maybe you could come down to go mushrooming for a day with me. I usually take a backpack with pop and sandwiches. And a walking stick. I could stay out in woods all day! Love going....

Those pheasant backs are pretty common where I mushroom.... I have 10 acres of woods and my neighbors have more than enough to spend the day in!

A couple years ago I took my 9 year old granddaughter with me and she found a patch that yielded over 2 lbs. I just set back and watched her pick them!

I never come home empty handed. There are several varieties of ferns and small buckeye and dog wood trees growing in my yard that came home with me....

Were exactly is Williamsport at in Indiana? The main place that we usually go is down to Atterbury fish and wildlife area. Great mushroom spots but the last couple of years we have only found around a handfull(didn't pick them). So many people hunt that place I'm not sure if their hurting it or not.

We do have a secret spot but I'm not allowed to say it

it's were most if not all our morels come out of and more and more people are hunting it
