Morning suprise? Horror?

That's a "garden spider". Hideous but she's only about half her full size! Wait till early fall and check her out!!!

Ugh..tell me about it... *shivers*
They used to use webs as bandages back in the day... (i think..)

These are also colloquially known as 'Singer Spiders" in honor of the Singer zigzag sewing machines b/c of the distinctive zigzag pattern in the center of the webs. Some of this breed of spiders can grow to a pretty impressive size. I always leave them alone, unless they HAVE to be relocated -- like the one who inexplicably decided my back door was a good place.

I moved her to the side of the house, she rebuilt her web, and spent the rest of the summer enjoying her new location. I'll leave them alone outside, but since my DH was bitten by a brown recluse and had to have surgery and has had several subsequent cellulitis bouts, the ones who are in the house (unless it's just a little grey flycatcher or something like that) get no grace.

yes, they made wonderful wound packing. If you ever find yourself lost in the deep woods and have an open wound, that's a good thing to remember. Hopefully you won't ever have to use that bit of knowledge except perhaps in the local trivia tournament!

Those type of spiders are sooo interesting.. they weave patterns into their web to confuse thier enemies into flying into them.... It is crazy... (hmmm maybe there was a subliminal message weaved for you..... walk into me.... walk into me)... ha ha

We love our spiders here! As long as they outside, I don't care for them in the house much. Not that they listen to me.

I just remembered a show i was watching last night..Bronx 911 (its a show that live films people and docs in the Bronx ER..)
Anyways.. this lady came into the ER with spider bite IN her eye!! AND AND AND... it had laid eggs IN HER EYE when it bit her!!!!!
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
An eye doc had to scrape in her orbital..(something.. cant remember the name now..)... to get the eggs out. Then she had to get a MRI to check that nothing went up into her brain... I kid you not people!!!.. I just saw this last night.
SEE.. i told you guys!!!

*of course it all ended rather un-dramatic for all that... she was put on antibiotic meds and i think pain meds too..and told to come back in the morning to see some other doc.. or something like that.. *
But still....!
