We dug a pond. In the spring the water comes up and over the bank because the melted snow flows down into it. I have fish, frogs, and turtles. Dragonflies. The pond attracts the mosquitoes so they lay their eggs in it and fish eat the eggs/larvae. I have much less "standing" water than I would have otherwise, plus native iris and cattails, and other plant life.
I realize that not everyone can dig a pond in their yard, but you could consider digging a little one in the lowest area of the yard. Toss in a couple of gold fish or swordtails.
