I have learned this year...it is not about the chicken...it's about hatching that egg! Let's just say, I could have bought a really nice horse with my egg money this year.

I'm pretty sure I've spent more than that on a pair of chickens at the grocery store. Definitely have spent more than that on a couple of turkeys at the grocery store.

some of these prices are making my heart stop!!!!

I must be the Number 1 cheapo here, but I have never ever ever ever spent more than $4 on a bird....Not my chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, turkeys....NOTHING.....Heck not even my newest addition of pheasants....

I just got 3 frizzles last weekend...paid $2 each
my pheasants were $1 each
most of my ducks....free
all my geese....free
most of my chickens.....free....if I did pay NONE were ever over $4.
my turkeys were $4 each
the peacocks.....free

and these aren't just throw away birds either...most of them have all been show quality birds and have gotten 1st blues at the fairs/shows....

but holy man...some of those prices.....can I ask what do you do with these birds that you spend $100's on....are they locked up in little coops like Fort Knoxs so nothing can harm them, are they ONLY for breeding purposes (and if so, how can you guarentee you didn't just by a $100 mutt---sometimes they can still be mutts even thought they look purebreed--one of my millie d'flurs is a complete mutt but you would never know it...she looks just like the purebreeds)....just questions I guess...
sorry if these questions offended anyone...I am just curious---and cheap...lol

Gotta say... a blue ribbon at a county fair doesn't usually mean much. County fairs are usually small and the birds win by default. Please don't think I'm saying "your birds suck!" cause I'm not. I just want to let you know never to judge a bird by a blue ribbon but to judge it by the Standard.

All my pricey birds live normal chicken lives. They DO have a special coop though to keep their condition up to par, but they scratch, they dig, they fly, they eat, they fight. I show, breed, and sell mine. Some are expensive because they are rare, others because they are of highest quality.

One of the many things I like about chickens is that most of them are so much cheaper than many other species. For instance, I paid about $100 for my CANARY, I paid $750 for my blue front Amazon (my other two Amazons were free, though), and exotic finches are routinely $50 each and over. So if you're used to that kind of market, paying a few bucks for a chicken seems like nuthin!

I have a large pack of dobermans, so all of my chickens are in pens anyway -- expensive or not.

And I don't eat chicken, so there's no question of eating these little guys.

I do like breeding, though, so it's a good idea for me to start with good quality birds!
