Most Money Spent?

Gotta say... a blue ribbon at a county fair doesn't usually mean much. County fairs are usually small and the birds win by default. Please don't think I'm saying "your birds suck!" cause I'm not. I just want to let you know never to judge a bird by a blue ribbon but to judge it by the Standard.

All my pricey birds live normal chicken lives. They DO have a special coop though to keep their condition up to par, but they scratch, they dig, they fly, they eat, they fight. I show, breed, and sell mine. Some are expensive because they are rare, others because they are of highest quality.

I understand what you are saying about 'default at county fairs' and all, so not offended by that, but we also have 'standards'. I am not going to let my girls show birds that are not 'the standard' for that breed, so that is a little insulting...just because they are county fairs at the same time does not mean they are 'backwoods fairs'....I do understand what you mean, but then again I did ask...so what makes 'highest quality' and how do the prices justify??? I don't mean to single anyone out, but now I have questions....(to much coffee and time I guess...lol) thanks

Well, as far as not buying mutts I'd say that most if not all these high prices were paid to extremely reputable breeders not some dude we've never seen at an auction.

where does this come from???IF implied towards my post, I don't see anywhere that says I get from an auction....although I have, but most of my birds have come from breeders and or others who did spend the money on them and now for one reason or another can't have/don't want the animals anymore....
Just because I don't pay the high prices doesn't mean how or where I got my animals from is a dive...

No! I wasn't implying that you or anyone else get's their birds from some hole in the wall! I was merely pointing out a situation where one could shell out some dough and have no idea what they're paying for. If I didn't do my research & find a reputable breeder and pay to have the birds shipped that's where I would be. I just knew what I wanted, found what I thought were the best and paid the price. I don't personally know anyone with chickens in my area. I think that's probably the case for most of the folks who have pais a lot for their birds. They knew exactly what they wanted & paid to get it or didn't have a reputable resource near home. Sorry you got the wrong idea there!

I do understand what you are saying...and I really have no problem with what others pay (although like I said before I am cheap...lol)....a person can research the standard of perfection, get breeders names, and all the details that go along with looking for the best of the best, but really does that make a $100 bird better than a $4 bird???Not really cuz just as I could be getting a c r a p bird at $4 the $100 bird could also be c r a p....I realize the chances are less with a good breeder and what not.....
And again I am not trying to insult anyone, but when I see high prices I get a million and one questions running through my head....
like.....
do these birds come guarenteed for xxxx amount of time (kinda like a warrenty on a vehicle)...I mean there is NOTHING staying that at the moment the money changes had your new bird is gonna live more than a second...
what about for breeding.....are they guarenteed to throw 'perfect babies'.....

I guess my main concerns are things that I have seen happen, as well has heard of happening before....
I have seen people purchase rabbits at an auction for $3 a rabbit, and then next weekend (or maybe 2 weekends from then) turn around and resell that exact same rabbit for $75-$100 +++++ WITH PAPERS GOING BACK MANY MANY GENERATIONS.....Telling of the time and money that went into that rabbit, the awards and ribbons it's won, etc. etc. etc....
Now I know it's always a 'buyer beware' type of deal, and it's nasty to lie about said animal(some day maybe this particular sellers dirty tricks will catch up with her), but in reality it does happen...and all future offspring from these said rabbits are lies, because of the made up many many generations on the papers...
(I have seen this person I am talking about doing this stuff, so I am not streching anything...just keeping names out for now, as I said someday her dirty tricks will catch up to her)....

Ummmmm.....

If you "have no problem with what others pay", as you say, then why do you keep trying to cast doubt on the quality of our purchases??

If you don't want to pay much for birds, then don't. It's your choice, just as it's our choice. Please do us the favor of allowing that we have enough sense to make our purchases with our eyes open, and with reasonable expectations of the birds' quality.

where do you see I have a problem...what I see is it brings questions to me, slow down there...I am merely asking because I am curious to know what someone gets when someone pays the higher prices...
Like I said it's always a buyer beware on anything. So I AM NOT SAYING THE LOW PRICES I PAY ARE BETTER..(from house, cars, animals, appliances, etc. etc. etc)
It is also has me curious to know what benifits come with paying higher prices....I can't afford to pay those prices, so it is something I am curious about...(heck if the turn around on them is profitable--I might have to look into it more...lol)
I never insulted anyone with paying 'higher prices'...(If I did sorry)...I wouldn't insult anyone for paying 'cheaper prices' either (if I did sorry)....
Our animals (ALL OF THEM) are pets..as you can see from my siggy line we have plenty of different animals. But they also each have a purpose here...If one got sick/injured/ etc. etc. I do take care of them...they don't just get put down. I do treat/care for ALL our animals...just incase you felt that our animals are disposable, THEY AREN'T.....
I don't care if I pay $4 or less on my birds, they are all named, taken care of, sheltered, spoiled, nurtured, played with, etc. etc. and each and every animal we have aquired here has been with OUR EYES OPEN.....

mmmm... $4

As far as people spending a lot of money on chickens - to each their own! I once spent an INSANE amount of money on a dog that I bought just as a pet - not to breed or anything (I still have him and he was worth every penny IMO).

This thread is starting to remind me of the coop thread where the OP couldn't believe how much people spent on their coops and was critisizing b/c he/she thought the money should be spent elsewhere.

Just because someone chooses to spend their hard earned money on a chicken and another person can't/doesn't want to doesn't mean the person with the $200 chicken is wrong! I am also a firm believer in the saying 'you get what you pay for'. Just my 2 cents.

I am trying to say the exact same thing...maybe it's coming out wrong...I wasn't saying paying more was right or wrong...i wasn't saying paying less was right or wrong...
(that's like insulting someone because they got something for free and didn't pay out the nose for it like the next person)....Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's bad doesn't mean it's the best either...just because it's exspensive doesn't mean it's the best or worst either...
I said it in the beginning...buyer beware.....
