Mottled/Spangled Orpingtons

Genetic question: what kind of results would one get from breeding mottleds to cuckoo orps? Just curious. Seems like it would make a mess but I just have to ask lol

They wouldn't be a very attractive bird, at least IMO...

They'd look something like the "55 Flowery Hens" that Greenfire recently imported, a bird with both barring and mottling.

Keep in mind they c/would look similar, but not exactly like these birds. Their genetic make up is far more complex than just Cuckoo X Mottled.

I've started my own line of mottled orpingtons! By pure accident of course. Buff orpington mom and mottled java dad! I know I will now have to breed babies to father, but my chicks are adorable and look exactly like mottled orpington chicks should!

You're gonna have color issues, due to the genes introduce by your Buff hen. You'll most likely have red/gold leakage in the offspring.

And from the Java father, you'll have yellow skin. Yellow skin is recessive when bred to white skinned birds. You won't be able to tell which chicks are carriers, unless you selectively breed them to another yellow skinned bird (their father), which will result in a portion of their young having visible yellow skin. Cull the birds that produce offspring with yellow skin, they're your carriers. Orpingtons, as a breed, are white skinned birds.

So you've got a start, but it'll be a long project to get them to true Mottled Orps, at least genetically.

Hefner patrolling the yard and keeping watch on his ladies. First day of sunshine we've had in weeks and the chickens are loving it.

My Huckleberry looks a lot like your Hefner. Huckleberry also has the black streaks on his comb. I am new to raising chickens & don't have a clue what that is. Could you tell me? Thank you.

Is this a mottled orp.

What color are the bottoms of her feet?

Is there are site where we can read about the traits of the Mottled/Spangled Orpington? I don't think I've noted what color the bottoms of Huckleberry's feet are. I didn't know it made a difference. Now that you ask about the other Orpington, I'm curious. Thank you.
