I heard that there's a live action Little Mermaid to be made, and it's going to follow more original storyline. That'll be interesting

So, it's a modern novel. What's it going to be about?

The very basic idea of it is that a girl who is very insecure about her looks finds out there is a man who has a magic machine and can change how she looks. She she sets out to find him but before he can change her, the machine is stolen so they have to search for and find it. But, before they find it, he gets killed and she must go on. But, when she eventually gets it, she refuses to use it because he had convinced her she was beautiful the way she was. That's all I'm going to say, because if I say more, it'll give away the mystery and surprises.

So, it's must more interesting than it sounds from what I've wrote here.

One thing I would definitely try to avoid, if I were you, is repeating things. If it's repetitive, it's boring.
Also, don't introduce all if the characters at once, or even put a lot if details about them in at first. That's just confusing. Spread it out.
My favourite things in books are plot twists at unexpected moments. You want a lot of different plot twists you can use and such, but don't throw them all in at once, otherwise it's overwhelming.
Last piece of advice I can give is: Don't make it like other books. Make it unique to you.
