We had the first thunderstorm of the year tonight...i was shocked since last year we did not have lightning or thunder till April.

Is that normal?

Usually we still havesnow, ice, and yucky weather till about mid-April, thenwe get horrible thunderstorms. This is the first (in my lifetime so far) that i have seen a thunderstorm so soon. A few years (2012 and 2014) we had so many tornado watches and warnings that i was thinking about bringing horses, chickens and sheep in to hide in the basement with me
Honestly, i used to get scared to death with tornado watches/warnings. Of course it is frightening still, but i can deal with it a bit better now

Hi!
I have raised 4 different batches of chicks so far. It isn't exactly hard, but if you want friendly chickens i reccomend getting 10 or less at a time and try to pick them up/hold them a lot. They have to eat chick starter (crumble) for the first TWO weeks i think, then they go on grower for so long, then a layer mash or crumble.
For my chicks, i used a big livestock waterer or a plastic tote both with a heat lamp. That and pine/aspen shavings with newspaper underneath. I kept them in the tote/brooder area till they were all feathered out, then i moved them to a coop. If you need to put them in with older hens, it is best to introduce them wheneveryone is roosted in the coop for the night. Hope that helps
