I am moving my 7 week old barred rock chicks to their coop today. I was told that they still need a little heat (especially at night). Is a 60 watt bulb enough heat for them? Do they even need a heat source now (it's still in the 30s and 40s at night)? I just got them accustomed to the dark at night. Will it confuse them by leaving the light on all day and night?

Thank you in advance for your advice!

If you still have their red heat lamp set-up you could put that up in 1 corner of their new coop for a few days, so that they can get away where it is cooler. After you observe their behavior for a few mornings and evenings you may find it isn't necessary and can remove it. The red will allow them to sleep and not want to stay up all night. Of course, many believe that once they are 7 weeks and feathered they don't need any heat. Many differing opinions.

I moved my chicks outside when they are 5.5 weeks and the temperature 45 F at night & 58-70F during the day. They are doing just fine for the last 10 days. You can use 60 watt incandescent light if the weather is still cold in your area.

Thank you Eggcessive and Speedy202 for the advice. I didn't specify the size of my coop. It's a 4x7 A-frame, so it's pretty small (for 4 chickens). I think it would probably be too hot in the little coop with the red heat lamp, so I opted for the 60 watt bulb for heat. I checked on them a couple times and they seem to be adjusting pretty well. I will only keep the light on at night until they start going out into their run (for a few days), then they'll have to live like real chickens!
