Moving to a little farm approximately one hour away. Need to move 10 chickens. Was thinking of using a large dog crate in the back of an Equinox. I had read that I need to bind their legs?????? Is this necessary? Looking for any suggestions to make this move as less stressful as possible. thanks!!

I have not moved chickens, but my impression is that one hour is not a big deal. And I never heard of binding legs, I would let them find their own balance. How big is the crate?

I always bind the legs when transporting - they naturally lay down, thus don't get bumped around as much and it makes for easier packing / unpacking. Even some cardboard boxes, with ventilation holes would be fine.

Okay, well, I definitely would go with CTKen's expert advice then, and bind the legs. With what do you bind them?

Thin rope, thick string. But the legs don't need to be bound tightly (just above the ankle joint). I'm sure others do things differently though...

Ehh.... I wouldn't tie their legs.
I brought my first flock(10 birds) home in a large wire dog crate, they all just hunkered down...about a 40 minute drive.

As I say, we all do things differently. It's certainly the norm here in Africa (I've worked in 15+ countries). It's safe, convenient and does not cause any issues that I have observed. Like most things, there's always more than one way to skin a cat
