Moving.... big dilemma with the chickens... =(

We had to keep our chickens in the brooder (in the house) longer than expected, and the dust, etc. were terrible to contend with. I think you need to keep looking for the right place. I'll bet you find something you'll be happy you waited for. Plan A would have worked for such a brief time that it's not worth considering.

That's a priceless picture! If I had grandkids I'd keep my chickens in the kitchen for a picture like that!

You wouldn't want to live around people that don't appreciate chickens anyway! Try to be open minded about the house, and concentrate on the things that you can't change, or hard to change, like zoning regs. I find that people often get hung up on things about a house that are really superficial, such as paint color, kitchen counters, carpets, etc...If you can build a coop, you can finish off a basement yourself. And save a lot of money! The uglier the house is, the better the price--important in this economy, so look past the superficials and at the potential.

The one suggestion if you are going to have them in the basement is to build a enclosed room and line all 8 sides with vinyl flooring and hook up and exhaust fan on a timer.

Put a heppa filter on the air inlet (smaller than the exhaust) and do a neg pressure closed system.

Personally I live on 80 acres and I would rather shoot myself in the foot than move back to suburbia....

Not to mention if you get caught you are gonna have to get rid of them anyways....

I totally sympatize. I am in the process (again, as our first few options got snatched out from under us!) of buying a house. Just look at the list on the bottom for my household. We need bedrooms, and yard space, and a nice price. NOT easy to find. I, unfortunatly, had to move out of the house that let me get the chickens (lease terminated unexpectedly) and into a temporary apt while I searched desperatly for a house we could both afford and want to live in. Real estate in our area is not cheap, and many of the 'better' options were an hour commute. Just keep looking and be thankful for the house you have in the meantime... wish I could have had your siuation instead of loosing mine!

You could buy my house.... LOL. It already has a Bantam barn and a bunch of chicken and pheasant pens( for like 300) ....... on 2 acres.... 2 horse barns......smaller 3 bedroom house though, but room to expand... he he
