Hello everyone:

Our family is moving to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado from South Florida and I want to bring my chicken. We will be driving so I was thinking the elevation will be fairly gradual. However, the elevation sickness tends to occur after 3 days if it occurs at all and the climate is much drier and cooler. Will any of these things going to be a problem for her?

Any suggestions on how to travel with her? Should I put her in a cat/dog crate with some hay bedding on the bottom then feed and give her water at the end of the day when we get to a hotel? Please advise.

Thank you,

Michelle

When I moved my three girls they were a bit grumpy the whole time. We drove ten hours, and I managed to keep them happy in a small car crate. I'd say less room for her to be jostled around the better, and definitely provide some hay, and possibly a comfort item if she has one. Mine had each other to rely on, so I'd just put something in there with her that she is familiar with. Feed her on stops and at the end of the night!

I would just try to keep them as comfortable as possible soft hay/pine
straw it pretty hot so give them water ever hour or so Feed them before you leave and in the evening and they should be ok

Sounds like quite an ordeal for one chicken to experience. How many hours/days of travel will that move entail? I would also worry about her escaping during a rest stop, you'd probably never find her. Do you have a portable wire pen, so she could have some grass time during driving breaks.
