Moving out of Alaska with 2 hens

Thanks for all the feedback. I have a friend who is willing to take them, just sad to see them go. I’d rather they be safe, though!

Given the distance they'd need to travel I think it would be safest and least stressful for them to be rehomed, especially since you have a friend willing to take them.

:highfive:
Just think of how exciting it will be to pick out new chicks.
I have a cousin in Valdez. She had a bear problem, but luckily didn't lose any birds. Sure tore up the coop, though. I don't know how ya'll do chickens up there.

Have you checked with the airline? You can check dogs and cats as baggage . I don't know why you couldn't put your chickens in a carrier and check them. Hatchery chicks go air freight so I know birds survive flights, the biggest deal would probably be health certs, but you can check on that too. Good luck and let us know what you come up with!

I agree with others that speaking directly to the airline or USPS is your best option as they will handle the customs. Driving would be a mess because you would need to adhere to the rules/regs of every state and province you pass through and all may be different. I have looked at transporting my flock across state lines before and between the required health testing and paperwork and stress on the birds of actual transport I agree that it is seriously worth considering homing them with a friend. I think this works out well for the chickens and you can sleep easy knowing that they have a good home and you may even be able to see them again one day. Good luck with your big move! I hope it goes smoothly and I hear nothing but good things about Idaho, I have family there myself.

I agree, I don’t know why you couldn’t fly them, and you might not even need a health check if it’s a direct flight, the airline should have details on that. Make sure that they are checked baggage, that way they fly with you on your flight. Good luck!

They will need whatever testing is required by both Washington state (if it's a stopover) and Idaho, and what ever the rules are by the airlines involved for poultry. You can call the USDA, and the state veterinary offices in those states, for more information. Also the airlines. Rules for poultry are much different than rules for budgies!
