Moving to Kentucky soon

I love Kentucky. How about the "mother" who left her newborn among trash in Philly IN THE WINTER!

Welcome back to Kentucky! This is what is called "God's Country" by some. It is beautiful and you won't find nicer people. The weather is crazy as you probably know, it may snow a day after it was 65 and sunny, but if you like change, you'll like that too. Yes, there are lots of problems here, like everywhere else, you just have to see what your priorities are. My autistic niece was mistreated in Florida, it made the news too, but you can't judge the whole state because of that. It was that person/that school. Maybe our crime rate is because we are so nice, maybe it is because we like our guns and know how to use them. Not sure, but I never ever worry my car was stolen, nor about being mugged, although it does occasionally happen, it is so rare it makes the news. Kinda like that child did, maybe it is just so common in other places it doesn't make the news?

OH, yes, we do have Malls, nice ones with Gap, Macy's and all that.
We do buy shoes, but only in the winter
We do feed our children, but mostly corn
And we do have one of the best basketball teams, but I don't care much about that, those boys are mostly imports

Welcome back! My husband grew up in Virginia Beach and loves Kentucky. We looked at land near Blacksburg, in TN, and WV, but loved what we found here.

I grew up here and love to travel, but really love coming home.

BTW, has anyone mentioned that Kentucky has great quilters and a quilt museum? I read in a book that Kentucky was the first state (I think) where citizens were encouraged to bring in family heirloom quilts to be appraised and cataloged for quilt history. In my rural farming area the kids not only wear shoes but they go to universities and their degrees are not bunny degrees either. We have a lab technician, engineer, financial planner, vet, PhD. (computer science), teachers etc. True, many move away but those in the medical/education fields can usually remain here. It is a fallacy that everybody who lives in the south is a hillbilly. I've lived in five states and, believe me, so-called "hillbillys" also live in Michigan, Washington state, etc.

countrylady, oh i know some hillfolks down there. They live in hollows or branches. I still dont know how they mangaged to bring a single wide trailer up there.

Wow, I am so happy for you. Its is absolutely beautiful there.

If I ever win the lottery I would definately have a 2nd home there. The farms there with all the white fence all Thoroughbred horses, yeah, thats what I'm talking about.

I think for the most part you will love making Kentucky a forever home. My husband is from Massachusets and loves where we live. We are out in the country . I lived almost my entire life right outside fort knox. Two wonderful years in Massachusets. A place I love to visit but Kentucky is always home. Some awesome home prices floating around too. Cost of living is pretty dang cheap too. Once you get used to the ever changing weather and just learn to roll with it, its pretty pleasant. I think this is some of the prettiest country ever. It never ceases to please me. We take long drives just to enjoy the rolling hills, barns peeking out through the trees on pretty little hill. We talk about moving now and then but thats just to escape family not the state. Welcome back, you won't regret it.

The news article is about a school system in a particular county. It happens. Its bad and hopefully the following lawsuit and forced re education will do them good. We are in Hardin County. I homeschool but my kids were in public for a while. We had a great school they were in. We picked homeschooling because it honestly worked for us better. I have another about to go into preschool and like the others his younger years will be at the same school. I think no matter where you live, you gotta watch out. Horrible stories seep out of schools all over the country. Where people have a hand in the doing and running there will always be issues. Now all the standards and laws will come into play and fixes will be made. You cannot judge a state by a movie, tv show, book, or single news article. Its ignorant. My FIL did that with Kentucky and waited 10 years to come visit. He is a Boston native so he just did not feel he could deal with the hillbillies. He was so shocked and absolutely fell in love with Louisville. He was ready to look at Condo's above a glass works shop and started planning another trip in 6 months before he even left to go back home.

I know the weather can change, but its not as bad as out here on the prairie. WE have extreme cold winters and equally extreme summers. Our high this year was like 115F and the nights never got below 90F. Do yu love near magnolia? George has a brother down there. Is the fleamarket in E-town still any good? I hope the still got the Michaels craft store , i remember when they opened it back in 01 or 02. The housing prices are really awesome. Its hard to find trailer on an acre plus for less than 50k, but its fairly easy here.
Should we retire and settle in Hardin County i might buy some hatching eggs from you if you got any.
