My black astrolorp was out side in a trance rolling over and over in the dirt, making a hole lol. She was talking away and my daughter was so concerned she had me come running. The chicken was cooing, bock bocking and just weird acting while rolling around ,then when I went near her she stopped, and allowed me to pet her while she bent her back and was so relaxed. Then she got up and was fine. I checked her vent and she looks fine, and she has no problems back there I can see. What do you think she was doing? She dusts under my hedge, but was going bonkers in this hole she dug. is this egg laying behavior?

Congratulations, you have just witnessed chicken bliss! She probably just discovered a brand new favorite dust bath. Sometimes mine look like road kill in that state.

LOL, my hens were doing the same thing this afternoon. I caught one who had rounded out a good sized dusty hole and was laying on her back with her legs sprawled out. Not very ladylike. Ahem.....

They are fun to watch huh? We call it "chicken tv".

Enjoy!

in the hot months my chickens like to dig down into a little hole, i imagine the cool dirt cools em off quite a bit... a little different than a dustbath... we call the dustbathing area of the yard the "chicken dayspa".... ha, 8 hens dustbathing at once side by side is quite a sight....

Sounds like mine. She may have just discovered that particular spot & really loved how it felt. Especially if it was damper or cooler in general.

I've got quite a bit of greens in our run so I water it once or twice a day & to knock off the hot/stagnate air during the day & perk up the grasses. They LOVE delving into their spa pits right after that because it's wet & cool & OMG they act like nuts!! I love watching them roll in the wet grass too on hot days, they roll around like flippin dogs!

But on nice hot days when they're really into the spa pits, I can go in there to change the frozen jugs & they won't even BOTHER to get out of my way, no matter if they're belly down or belly/legs up lol.
