Yesterday, here in the Mitten, we got rain on and off ALL day. Now my run is a muddy, horribly smelly mess. I mean, it's a gag worthy smell from 20ft away. It's not a chicken run, per se, but it's my turkey and one duck. I've laid a pallet down over the mud to hopefully help dry it up. We haven't had an issue until now. Has anyone ever had success with pallets?

I've had the same problem as you have! It's always terrible when it happens. Since that happened to us we've put an alternate 'ground' material down. We had the most success with mulch (wood chips). What we do is let the mud dry out a bit then lay the mulch 4-6 inches thick throughout the entire duck run. I have 11 ducks and about a 12x19 ft run. You do have to change the mulch about every 6-8 weeks though. The mud just takes over underneath again. That's pretty much the same process except this time you have to scrape off the old mulch. wehn this is all done we spread it out in the field by our farm as free fertilizer to the farmers.

My dad is in the process of finishing my new coop and run (yay!), so I will lay mulch down in that one. The pallet seems to be doing the job right now. I've got a 5ish month old Rouen and two 5 week old Black Swedish - I can't wait for them to meet!

Since 4 - 6 inches gets taken over by mud..., have you tried laying down 12 - 18 inches...
