Muscovies to Be Gased In Ocala.

I agree that they need to be removed. They are feral and make it harder for native species but I do have a problem with all the meat going to waste. That's just senseless. If we have feral muscovies in Michigan, I sure don't know where to find them. But I would snag a couple if I could.

I agree with this. These are often friendly ducks that like people. Please, if you can, save some of these babies and make sure you follow the new marking laws, etc. While you're at it, if you can, take some of the other domestic ducks dumped out there, too.

Hello,

My name is Stephanie Bumpus and I live a few minutes from Ocala, Florida. The city counsel did vote last night about the muscovies and the vote was to euthanize approximately 100 birds. I know that the USDA and the city of Ocala have a contract to lace food with Alpha-Chloralose, which depresses the birds central nervous system. Once the birds are sedated, the USDA collects them and puts the birds in a gas chamber and euthanize them at a cost of $8500 tax payers money.
I understand that the population of the muscovies is uncontrollable and to some they are considered a nuisance. Killing them is NOT the answer. No life deserves to be killed. They are organizations like Ocala Wild Life Santuary and All Creatures Santuary that were willing to relocate to farms where they could live out their days. The city said no because they didn't meet the insurance requirements! The City of Ocala has already killed 200 muscovies back in 2009 and new birds found home here at Tuscawilla Park and neighboring parks. So obviously this doesn't work!!!
I think that this is so inhumane. I do agree that there is a problem but there are many ways to handle it.

I started this in hopes if we get enough people to sign that the city would reconsider their decision. If you all have facebook accounts please copy and paste the link on your wall so many people can see/sign this petition. We must act fast. I have already contacted City Counsel President Daniel Owen and All creatures Santuary. No response yet.

I'm about five hours away - in South Florida - or I'd be out there right now. Town council thinks 110 ducks is a huge crisis for their parks? I don't know how many parks they have, but Ocala is not a tiny town. 110 ducks is not a big deal (we have about 50 in my neighborhood), and every year cold weather, storms, and predators like raccoons, dogs and large egrets thins the population by at least twenty percent.

Incidentally, Muscovy duck eggs are excellent for baking. They're very useful birds, and some people eat them, which is better than killing and discarding them.

The offers from Belisle and Hennessey were set aside in favor of conflicting federal and state regulations and control order that prohibit the ducks from being moved to a new sites and that also allows Muscovy ducks to be killed for the public good.

There seems to be the real villain.

The city council also said that the rescuers had to come up with a million dollar insurance policy before they could resuce the birds... Which they couldn't..

So lets go steal them and do it our selves? If 110 muscovies go missing and no sanctuary or anything has them then no one can get in trouble and there will be no need to kill them.
