muscovy - atipico & wild tpye genes

I would say your drake is the carrier of the atipico gene not knowing your ducks. As for the wild gene, most Muscovy carry it. Its pretty hard to breed out, you have to actually try and get it out of your flocks.
As for the Atipico being better type, I think type is better type, color just happens to be the paint job on the type. I have heard some say that some colors are better etc like whites, however if you think about it, they worked on the whites for meat, so ya.. they did gain type, it was the color that happen to go with the type being bred, not the other way around. I think if you keep working on type, and do nice paint jobs when you can is the way to go.

If your birds do have wild-type allele @ the dusky locus, & it is dominant to its dusky (atipico) allele, then you should see some evidence of it in duckling down! As such, I would have thought it relatively easy to remove from a flock because selecting dusky duckling pattern is selecting away from wild-type isn't it! If it (wild-type allele) is there then you can see it in duckling down. Conversly, your dusky ducklings will be pure for dusky (a/a) & won't have its wild-type allele.

Type & size are two different things. Breeders wanting to produce meat birds would be selecting for size, but not necessarily type

Selecting for type is often made easier when breeding white only because you don't usually have to cull on many colour/pattern anomolies from the standard (if show birds the aim). You can select your best two or three white ducklings from say 20 bred without then having to cull further on colour/pattern imperfections.

yep its hard especially when you have limited room to both breed for type and colour.

i have two pens going, one for type, one for colour. i want some silver atipico girls this year and all i have so far is a silver atipico runt out of 37 ducklings! typical, plenty of wild type silvers and male silvers. i'll cross my fingers on this last batch(the ones pictured earlier)

having said that i think type is more important, there isn't much point for me having a bunch of pretty colours running around on small birds if i want to show in the future. but, its all part of the fun with muscovy, it would bore me if i bought perfect birds and just kept breeding perfect birds, more fun to breed the standard up i think:)
