A big Thank You to all of you helpful folks. I am now a proud duck rancher. ;>)
I found a nice lady in the Olympia area that had several baby ducks, born yesterday, and several that were 2 months old. I went with the crew that was 2 months old.
All are Muscovies. I had planned to get only 4 girls and one Drake, but I ended up with 4 girls and 2 Drakes. I thought one of the boys to be so handsome that I just couldn't leave him behind, so after buying the first 5, I got a few miles down the road, turned around and bought Elvis. ;>) I suspect there will be a day that I will regret having 2 Drakes instead of one. Much to my surprise and relief, after my wife learned that I had bought an extra duck... she didn't murder me. ;>)
One Drake is silver, his name is Fred, the other is black with white and cool looking white patches on his chest, his name is Elvis. Two of the girls are black with a greenish blue sheen. One is brown and to tell you the truth, I think the other is also brown, but I would have to run out and check. All appear to be healthy. I doubt that they enjoyed the nearly 4 hour drive in the back of my truck to their new home. I stopped a few times to check on them and each time they were huddled at one end of a large dog crate. They would then look around, stretch their legs and chirp, or whatever you call that noise they make.
For tonight, they will be sleeping in a dog crate. They just dined on cracked corn, well water and a wee bit of lettuce. They are resting on a bed of fresh straw. We will introduce them to their new chicken friends in the morning..... and maybe even Falco, our 2 year old GSD. Falco does fine with his chickens, although he does try to herd them from time to time. Hopefully he will adjust to the ducks without too much trouble.
So there you go.... I'll save my million rookie questions for some other time. ;>)
I am a very happy guy.
Cheers,
Dan
