Very pretty!! and Welcome! Some of my muscovies[/URL]![]()
Really? My twine girls HATE the rain, they always hide in their house or under something. That is why i thought it was so odd that he liked the rain lolMy Muscovy do the same thing! They love hanging out in the rain and seem to get even more excited, diving and chasing each other in the pond. I just think they are sooo cool!
peas are good for niacin. ducklings seem to have the hardest time needing extra, mostly because they are growing so fast, not all ducklings have the problems, Seems Pekin ducklings are more prone to it than others. If you have ducklings that have hatched under a mama duck they very seldom need the extra because she gets them out foraging for bugs and knows what her ducklings need for nutrition. That is if they are able to forage. Most of us can't get duckling/duck feed so have to settle for chick feed which is formulated for chicks so doesn't have the amt of niacin ducklings need. I like the All flock feeds I buy Purina mainly because that's all I can get, but it is formulated all all flocks whether ducks, turkeys, chickens, geese and has adequate amts of niacin. So I like to err on the side of caution, why not go ahead and give them Brewers yeast sprinkled on their feed and keep them on it till around 12 weeks old or use the niacin capsule or tablet and mix it in their water for the same amt of time. Only have I used extra was when I had a lone duckling hatch and brooded him in the house. other than my old drake who is now getting Brewers yeast daily. We have to remember to that Muscovy's are not from the same genetics as the mallard derived breeds, and that may play a part too in that we don't see leg problems as much. or I haven't since I have been a member here. That doesn't mean though that they can't have them nutrition and exercise and good old sunshine and genetics all play a roll together.Someone mentioned extra niacin needs for ducks . . . Do you give supplements or just niacin rich human foods/treats?

And when you have different breeds it sure does help not having to buy different feeds. what do you use to drop the protein down GQ? oats?I have never needed too BUT my feed is good for ducks from day 1 as per the tag, for those who can get chick starter then the need is there. I can even get duck starter i just prefer to stick to this one as i could never use up a 55lb bag of feed before wanting to drop the protein. This one is 18% and i like to drop now in their 4th week,(15-16% pro as per storey's guide) i find this is better for the drakes, slows the rapid growth down. I did with my latch clutch, plan to for the calls and any others.

Whole corn? Not unless you sprout it or can't get chopped. Better digestion to get nurients that way. Scovies do fine in the wild and maybe they just haven't gotten too far from feral. As long as they can range, once you get them past bitties what ever you feed them is pretty much just to keep them around isn't it? I just wish they'd stop stealing the dog's food.I tried that and the buggers picked around it, so i actually switched to a grower with 15%, i didn't want to move off the same feed but these guys are sly lol I admit, the 18% feed i am still feeding to the chickens lol and have been since they came home as a few day olds, just with 4 of them it's beyond lame to buy a 55lb bag of feed, so for now their sharing with the calls, my one feed supply sells it in a small 11lb package and that does for awhile. I'll likely end up with another 25kg(55lb) soon with the 6 chicks and 2 buff ducks arriving at months end though. I just like my feed as fresh as possible, it's all stored in my hall, which keeps pretty stable but still, best not to buy huge quantities. I am sorta hoping the calls can eat the 'scovies grower but it's a pellet and not huge but probably not small enough. I do have a lead on another feed which is a duck grower/finisher that maybe a crumble(need to check with the company on this) which maybe better suited for them. I could probably mix it for the Muscovy too.
I wish i could get the feeds you guys can but even when we have the same brands they change stuff, drives me nuts plus when i inquire about feeds i always get the standard, just feed 'em whole corn.![]()
