oh duh that makes since the youngest muscovy ducks i have had have been 4 mo so i dont see the quick growth of the young ones.

They are pinioning and removing the extra small toe on one foot. I plan on pinioning next spring. If done at hatch, both are relatively bloodless and painless. Humans regularly 'mutilate' animals for conveneince of raising. I disbud kid goats at 2-3 days of life to stop horn growth and give them a better chance at finding a good home and also not getting hung up in fences and dying from choking/exposure. I also tattoo the goats, and extra male goats are castrated.

Tattooing the ducks is done at an older age and IS technically still mutilation. It is VERY painful and stressful. I'd honestly argue that pinioning or removing a toe at hatch is much less painful/stressful than tattooing at an older age.

Just a brief FYI:

Someone released domesticated Muscovy Ducks into the wild. After several years of research and now another period of time since March speaking with the APA/IWBA, the USFWS has determined it was the "pet" folks that have caused this issue. Argue what you want, exhibition folks did not release a champion show bird into the wild. Meat/egg producers did not release them. It left only one type of people: pets.

Dr Allen has made it clear: NO PET MUSCOVY DUCKS.

So either start eating your extra ducks and/or their eggs or enter them in a legitimate exhibition.
