They are pinioning and removing the extra small toe on one foot. I plan on pinioning next spring. If done at hatch, both are relatively bloodless and painless. Humans regularly 'mutilate' animals for conveneince of raising. I disbud kid goats at 2-3 days of life to stop horn growth and give them a better chance at finding a good home and also not getting hung up in fences and dying from choking/exposure. I also tattoo the goats, and extra male goats are castrated.
Tattooing the ducks is done at an older age and IS technically still mutilation. It is VERY painful and stressful. I'd honestly argue that pinioning or removing a toe at hatch is much less painful/stressful than tattooing at an older age.
