Muscovy

Does anyone know if the muscovy is a drake or hen?

Also will they be fine in the wild where no one is feeding them or anything. There is a strict wildlife feeding rule at the pond.

Anymore opinions on the duck being wild or dumped?

I think its most likely feral, muscovy ducks are better at surviving in the wild than other duck species so there are small colonies of feral ones all over the country. Although I think its a tad odd that he is all alone if that is the case, maybe he was dumped awhile back with a few ducks and he is the last survivor. There is no way you could no for sure if someone dumped it or if it is just part of a feral colony but it is a domestic duck the wild Muscovy are pretty much completely black. I wanna say hen but I can't be confident based off of just that one picture maybe with a few more pics I could make a better guess.

Generally yeah. I mean obvious the wild is a lot less safe for any animal than a controlled environment but domestic Muscovy are much better than other domestic ducks at living in the wild because they are great flyers and great foragers.

I saw it this morning. It was hanging out with 5 canadian geese and 2 pairs of mallards. He was foraging with them on the bank. He also tried to come up to me.

I'm sure if you bring her some food she will probably take it right out of your hand Muscovy are very friendly ducks :)

I brought the muscovy some duck treats. Soon as he saw I had a small container he came running and he was very happy and ate from the container and now he loves me. Definite dump. I name him Talon. He has all black talons EGG~cept 1, which is white.

Are you considering taking him? Once you start feeding him he’s going to be more dependent which makes him vulnerable to abuse from those who hate them. If he came right up to you he is most likely dumped or flew off from his original home. That’s how Muscovy become feral they are either dumped or fly off. Just a small section in Texas has Muscovy that are considered wild and they are the protected because they are considered migratory. Or that’s the way it use to be anyway.

I would love to take him! But I already have 2 ducks in a setup for 2 ducks. They are a pair. He is large and I don't need a 2:1 ratio of male to female ducks.

I know about the feeding, and I will not feed him anymore.

Will he be fine in the wild since he is attached to humans with feed?

I think from the picture you posted its probably a girl, but I couldn't be sure without seeing more pics. What kinds of noises does it make?
