Mushing

My concern was about running a small dog with larger dogs - using such a mix of sizes on one team. My hubby is about a foot taller than I am, I can keep up when he walks, but for every three steps he takes, I have to take 4. I tire out a lot faster just trying to keep up.
My Irish setter was 3 inches taller than my English setter at the shoulder. The English really had to work hard to keep up when they were playing, and tired out quicker. The English is 3 years younger than the Irish.

good point.

Hiya everyone.
Stern Rose.
Dogs cool by panting. They have only so much tongue.
Long haired dogs retain heat.
My Dobey was the smartest, most loyal, intelligent, friendly, with tons of energy and stamina, willing to please dog that I ever had the pleasure of knowing. He had good feet too. I trained and used him for hunting birds, small game and large game. He was my retriever, my tracker and my guardian AND my best friend. I also used him for mushing. But all winter he had it real tough. He'd want to be with me wherever I went. Even if it was -40 he would practically roar to get out of the house to come with me.
Because of his short coat and the fact other people were afraid of Dobeys when we went visiting he always sat outside shivering. Even if I left my coat for him he would still be visibly uncomfortable.
I swore I would never get another dog that was not suitable for the environment.
FYI

Awww. I would have just sat outside and hugged him all day.

Our winters don't get too cold so my short haired Alaskan stays outside. My 2 pet labs however sleep in the mudroom or garage. They are wimps

My dogs are outside all day everyday. Rain, shine, heat, snow. I think because they are exposed to it, they acclimate very well. They do come in at night because I can't stand to listen to them barking at the nightlife, BUT they have a cool place to sleep and my furnace is set down at 60 degrees at night. Many times I have had my irish setter almost solid icicles, but still excited to stay outside and play with me. My lab stayed outside also, but she was pretty old and arthritic, so she slept in the insulated doghouse most of the day.
