Mushroom foragers

It's chicken of the woods. Verify it with another mushroomer in your community or on line before you try a small amount the first night. (If all goes well you can have more the next night-allergies and digestive acceptance ;) The outer rings are the most tender. I myself like it a little less hydrated or watery in which it takes more of a 'chicken fibrous' consistency. But you can eat it any way. Butter and garlic salt sauteed. Mmmm....

Chicken is one of my least favorite mushrooms. I eat it in scrambled eggs though and it gives it a real chicken flavor....

I agree check with people in your area to make sure it does not have some local trait that makes it less desirable to eat.

Make sure the small piece is small the first time, and all wild mushrooms must be cooked, ever raw!

Thanks all for the input! My son's father in law is a local shroomer and he verified the find but cautioned me that some of the local chicken is less edible than others. His wife got numb lips and swollen tongue from a batch once that they attributed to an interaction with meds. Since I'm taking 3 different heart and blood pressure meds now, I think I'll just enjoy this one in nature and stick with the morels, puffballs, Chanterelles and shaggies. Those get me my shrooming fix through 3 seasons and I have eaten them for most of my life. BTW Bogtown, thumbs up on mushrooms sauteed in butter with a little garlic, salt and pepper (I love morels & puffballs sliced and cooked this way). I also like my morels sliced in half dipped in egg batter, dredged in panko or bread crumbs with itallian herbs and a bit of black pepper and fried with a little olive oil in an iron skillet. You can leave out the herbs for more morel flavor...either way it'll keep you in the woods until dark!

So I went for a walk this evening as I saw some lobster mushrooms by my coop. My chanterelle spot is empty. No chanterelles. Idk if they need heat after rain...? Anyways.
Ralphie what did u think of the black trumpets?

When I went to gather guinea eggs this evening, I practically stepped in these.
Shaggy Mane mushrooms
full

They became these
full

Shaggy Manes are definitely better batter fried. They were delicious.

I have never picked a shaggy mane, I saw one once, last year with Jerry and BC.

I always thought of them being kind of like "old man of the woods" Why bother picking it there is no "meat" in there. BUT those look really good!

The WWD and I shared one little trumpet, the rest went to my cousin (we forage together quite a bit) and a different cousins son that wants to learn mushrooming beyond morels. He has a morel patch that is unbelievable. He got enough he gave me 30-40 dried ones this summer. Hopefully, he will learn enough about other mushrooms to take me with him next spring.

Anyways back to the trumpet. It was a very "delicate" taste. Also very fast to cook. It was delicious there was just not enough of it. I am going to try and find the spot again. We were so excited about finding the little patch we forgot to mark it, or photograph it for return visits. We know the general area is all. You know how hard finding the same 5ft square area in a woods can be...Dumb us.

Yeah. Those trumpets are on the same level as the chanterelles imho. I only had those tiny ones last year but boy oh boy... they were tasty morsels.
R2elk those battered mushrooms look amazing!

More mushroom hunting on my agenda this weekend. Jerryse arrived about 3 hours ago. Are you going south Ralphie to Iowa or do you want to shroom hunt at camp? We could try some different paths. I think it might not as productive as your spots though... and venison back straps aren't in season right now...lol
