My 1st Southern Coop

Superb!

Have you figured up an estimate of how much your coop cost? I really like what you have done and would like to do something like this.

They will find the other roosting poles when they are older.
And you know you will be getting more chickens! By fall you won't be able to stand it and will want more cuties. If you make it til spring without any new additions you will at least have your finger nails chewed way down!

This is a mad addiction that grabs hold of you and since you have those evil Silkies then they will put a mad spell on you, as well. Might as well give up now.

how do you feel about the room inside the coop? I noticed it is 40sq ft but you have 13 hens in there..

I was planning on building the same setup for my hens but everyone keeps talking about 4sq ft per bird so i scratched it and started planning for a 8x12 walk in.

Honestly, it was right around $1,200 or so.
But you have to remember that we were shooting at the hip with a lot other than the general design.
So had we known exactly what we was going to end up doing, I think we could have done it for a bit less.
But realistically, I don' suppose it is that terrible for as good of size as it is. If we didn't have chickens it would make one heck of a garage for the mower(s) and tools!

EDIT: We didn't buy the most expensive, but we also didn't buy the cheapest of everything we could have. So that is something to keep in mind as well. I think with some supplies on hand and/or going to a Habitat for Humanity type place for some items, it would likely be a bit more cost effective.

I know the birds will get bigger (although with half being banties, some won't get THAT much bigger), but right now they have plenty, plenty of room. They sleep on top of each other, just like the last pictures I posted. All 14 chickens literally take up 1/4 of the coop.

In my personal opinion, I feel like the number of roosts increases the usable space quite a bit, realistically.
Since I got the chickens out in the pen this weekend, they haven't been hanging out in there much at all, so now they just go back in to sleep.

I'll take some more pictures and let you see, but they have plenty, plenty of room right now.

Already adding onto the coop...

We wanted a small "wing" (no pun intended...) for the Silkies to hang out and have chicks.
I'll try to take pictures when we finish up the last bits to get it going and have some of the smaller chickens living in there for the time being.
