I never handle my chicks although do spend a lot of time quietly watching them. Once they are adults they come running when a car drives up, jump in the back of the truck and the front of the car. Recently after unloading grain I chased the New Hampshire hen out of the drivers side floor and the barn cat out of the back seat and it was not until 24 hours later and a trip to the grocery store and gas station I realized there was still an EE hen under the back seat who had LAID AN EGG! So I don't think you have to handle them when they are babies-mine realize as adults that people are the source of good things and are curious about us and want to be with us. Already the two week old chicks are showing interest in me and the only time I have picked them up was to take them out of their shipping box and move them from their water tub first home to a stall. Some are friendlier than others but all see people as the source of good stuff and they seem to come by it naturally.
