My 3 Salmon Faverolles

Well, Cackle Hatchery is very nice and understanding. Without even asking, they are sending me more chicks (hopefully sexed right this time) and so at a very early stage in my chicken keeping... I've learned the very helpful skill of... CHICKEN MATH.

Joking aside, I am very happy. It is bittersweet though. I will still get to have some hens for my coop, but it is sad I will need to try the impossible for the three sweet roos. I am still on the hunt for a good home for my boys, who will be big enough to move into the coop when the new chicks come in (I pushed the date until after a trip we are taking) and the female chicks can take over the brooder.

OMG. This is crazy. They're like Pringles or Gremlins, whichever you prefer, and numbers just grow overnight.

:hugs I'm sorry you had to go through this. I'm glad they are owning up to it and replacing your birds though. I hope the boys all find great homes! I've had astounding luck with finding roos amazing homes on Craigslist FYI. Just don't list them less than $10 or people will buy them for dinner (unless you don't mind)

I didn't even think of CL. I will do that tonight. No, I would like them not to be dinner. Hard to prevent I know. Thanks for the tip!

Every time you think your flock is done you'll find a new chicken or breed you need! I'm still on the lookout for Orloffs and CCL despite our flock being 'done' haha : D
Yup, I see how one thinks never me and then here we are, soon to be a half dozen chickens. I wish I could sneak them, but my town would freak out considering they only just started allowing backyard chickens!

This is turning out to be so sad and frustrating. CL sent me a warning to remove the ad and that it was illegal, meanwhile I see dozens of posts selling chicks and other farm animals in quantities less than six and less than two months old. Facebook hobby farm groups has generated me a couple interested people, but then they disappear.

And all of this makes me feel guilty for participating in an industry that just mostly sends boy chicks to a meat grinder? I’ve wanted chickens for years, but we were renters and now just so happens the summer we can do it is the summer half the country is also suddenly interested in chickens due to the pandemic and people turning into crazy food hoarders.

I want to call sanctuaries nearby, but I fear I’ll get some vegan lecture because I’m likely not the only person this summer unloading lots of roosters.

I’m also frustrated that our town won’t allow roosters. I get they’re noisy, but so are the three little yappy dogs two houses away. Which is actually worse? That guy lets his dogs into the yard early in the morning and all they do is unleash a battery of shrill small dog yaps until he lets them in again or goes out there to yell at them.

Just venting. Thanks for listening.

Today my last boy gets picked up for his new home and I’m so sad. He’s really blossomed over night with the others rehomed. He wants all the attention. It really sucks the town of Poughkeepsie doesn’t allow Roos.

At least I don’t think they do... the ordinance says, “Keeping of roosters, ducks, geese, swans, turkeys, guinea hens or any other species of birds or fowl which are not traditionally confined to a cage inside a dwelling is prohibited.”

but what does that even mean, a cage inside a dwelling? So does that mean I can have a rooster if it’s in the coop with the hens? The coding also specifies that a chicken refers to a hen and that I can have no more than 6. But does it really say I can’t have a male, not outright.

And now I have until 10 am when someone from Mahopac is coming to figure it out. The zoning dept opens at 8 and I plan to call and argue because I am listening to my neighbors yap machine bark since 6 am also.

I have 3 one week old hens and the coop is built for 4. I have space for him. Do people keep a rooster in the coop? I didn’t look up info on roosters because I didn’t expect to have a roo that I now love.

I’m just rambling

I'm pretty sure that means it has to be in a cage inside your house (like you'd keep a small bird) - I doubt you could convince them that a coop counts. I know it's hard letting them go, but hopefully they'll all have good homes in more homestead-friendly nearby towns. :hugs

If you do manage to keep him, yes, a rooster can go in the coop with the hens.
