My 7 Year old daughter wants to show Seramas.

I wrote a simular thread before I noticed this section of the forum. To make things easy I would like to just find out what is involved in getting juniors in showing. My daughter wants to show and picked out the breed she wants to show, which is seramas. Im currently discussing getting some show quality seramas from someone but what do I need to get her prepared for showing?

Attending poultry shows is the first and best step I can think of. Most have showmanship and they encourage all to participate even if they have to "borrow" a bird. At the Tucson show we had this little 4 year old with her cochin that would fall asleep on the table and in her arms. It was the cutest thing.

Second is to see if your local 4-H has a Clover Kids club and see if they will do a little bit with poultry. The purpose of Clover Kids is to introduce the kids to different projects without the competition.

Third, get a book on showmanship from the local extention office or online, learn it, and work with her yourself. Showmanship is as much about holding and attaching with the bird as it is about technique. You can learn the technique from the book and show her how, but just getting the bird out of the cage and holding and working with it every day makes a difference.

4-H was my first place to turn cause I started in 4-H but they only allow it now for 4th graders and up. I will look up this clover kids thing. I havent heard of it. But will defiantly look it up now that you have mentioned it. I printed out a form for the junor membership for the ABA. They will be sending out her stuff then. She is so excited about getting her badge and ID card. lol I remember being excited about those things as a kid.

I haven't seen a serama in person, but I wonder if they are almost too small for showing? I showed Dutch and Bantam Cochins, and the Dutch was already so tiny to hold without hurting. Maybe someone else can chime in here, I wonder if the Seramas are flighty like seabrites.

Have you tried the APA-ABA poultry program for youth?
They start at age 5 and membership is only 5$.
It's a great program I would highly reccomend

Also some 4-H leaders would let her participate in showmanship event hough she is under age.

Most serama's are very calm, not flighty.
Also, you may want to try Silkies or a friendly bantam of some type, you won't get a Serama that is the Quality you want for under $100 each, unless you want poor quality, they are a dime a dozen, but still spendy......

The national leader is great. She has lots of info and replies to e-mails quickly.
Also you can find your state leader and many great recources on thier website.
I would reccomend feathersite to learn about that breed.
