My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

Yeah, I was thinking about that. I don't think it's contagious, but don't really know for sure. I don't think that had anything to do with what was wrong with Henry, but like I said, I really don't know for sure. Don't know if I'll ever find out what it actually is on Scarface. Wondering if he got snake bit or something. We do have snakes around here, we're in the woods and we have rattle snakes and water mockisins or cotton mouths. (didn't feel like looking up how to spell water mokisins.) You get my drift anyway. Could have been a cotton mouth bite maybe.

Snake bites don't look like infectious growth. At least I don't think they do. You should always quarantine new animals as a safety precaution. You don't know their condition and don't want to put your at risk either.

Yes, you're absolutely right. I found that out first hand about a year ago when my husband brought some pullets home from his friends house and it was a total mess. Luckily I did have them in a separate pen and kept them there, but after dealing with a whole lot of junk and dieing chickens, found out from a necropsy report that they were full of all kinds of things. So glad that I hadn't let them out in the yard with the rest, but still can't use that pen anymore. I think that you're supposed to be able to lime it really good to kill everything and it's supposed to be safe after that, but I would always be scared to ever put anybody in there ever again, so just wasted space now.

Harry, hope you and Scarface are doing ok today. I will be out of pocket most of the day, but will check for updates when I can.

FYI, my white goose (her name is Snow, by the way) is still doing well and so far no sign of another egg.

It's almost certainly a sinus infection I think. I don't know anything about geese but we went through this with our peacock, and people who know way more than me told me that is probablywhat it was. I would guess geese are similar. We treated our peacock with Cipro/ Baytril and ideally we should have been able to catch him and treat his eye further with antibiotic eye drops and he might need to have the lump lanced. I never was able to do this with the peacock. He did improve hugely just with the Baytril. I can't say he's 100 % better but definitely at least 98%. We are in a wait and see mode at this point with him. If your gander is at the point where you can handle him, try some antibiotic gel, Triple Antibiiotic ointment, on his eye, if you can't get anything else. Use human eyewash first or saline solution, to cleanse the eye, and then applyl the gel. You need to do this a few times a day. Oh, also, some feed stores sell this antibiotic air gun type thing, I haven't seen it, but read about it, you can puff the eye with the stuff without actually touching the eye. The best solution for the eye is polydex or cipro eye drops, but you have to order those. At least we do here.
Use the gel in addition to the injections, if that's all you can get hold of.

Utah,
Snow is absolutely stunning! Such a beauty! I'm glad she's feeling better!

Harry
I was crushed to read about Henry's passing....I really don't have words.....I know your loss is devastating......I'm praying that you can find comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering, he's up above, swimming, plucking grass, sunbathing and feeling fantastic! Along with all the other geese that have passed on....I know my beautiful african Gretel is up there, she died suddenly, out of the blue in jan......they'll make a great pair.....
May God comfort and bless you.....

Thank you all very much for your compassion. Poor Scarface is just lost without him, but he's been hanging around us all day long and is a lot more personable to us now. I feel so sorry for him though. His face looks a lot better today. I have been putting the Tetracycline in his water now for about 3 days, and he's looking better. Haven't wanted to stress him out by grabbing him and messing with him right now while he is going through his grief period, may make things worse for him right now. Will wait a day or so before I try to do that, until he feels a little better. Maybe the Tetracycline is working. Looking lots better. I will let y'all know how it's going, and will keep a check on the thread. So glad that Snow is doing better and getting over her ordeal.
