My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

Great job, Harry!! If bacterial, I would expect Henry to respond fast to penicillin. Good luck with Scarface and don't forget to take a lot of pics in the process.

FYI.... my white goose is recovering. She finally was able to get membrane out of her vent overnight and is much perkier this morning!
J glad to hear your goose is recovering, I didn't even know she was having problems sounds like egg laying trouble, but happy to hear she is recovering from it.

No, thank goodness. I had that happen to a goose last year and she passed within 12 hours of first appearance of anything being "off". This is the opposite. She had a shell-less egg break inside of her. She has been pooping yolk/egg whites for almost 36 hours and appears to be fighting peritonitis. I have now moved her inside the house for closer observation. My vet is hoping the shock of the move shuts down her laying cycle.
Ah, yes, that would be the 'off' button. Great idea, hope it works.

Thanks! She's lost the swollen tucked up look and is definitely feeling all better now. She is quite irritated to be locked away in the house and lets me know every time I check in on her. So far no sign of going into egg laying mode. Here she is today:

Harry, sorry to partially hijack the thread. Any updates on Scarface and Henry??

Hi all. So glad your white goose is recovering! That's great news, I know you are so relieved, and I'm so thankful also that she is. My Henry however, was dead in the pond this morning at around 8:00 when we went out to check. It was about 3:00am when we gave him the shot, and he was as he's usually been for at least an hour after that when I went out and checked on him. It started raining and thundering later on, so after I finally went to bed, it was around 7:30 or 8:00am when we discovered him floating in the pond. I'm so sad I can't even express. My husband thinks it was because I gave him the shot because he died after that, but I told him that it was just too late. I believe that had we did it a week ago, that it would have worked. He had already been laying on his side that morning when husband went and picked him up and put him in the pond. I was very careful when I gave him the shot. I gave him just a hair over .5 ml for 10 lb goose, I made sure I shook the medicine, held it upside down when drawing out, and got the air bubbles out and only liquid was coming out of the needle before giving it to him. I also swabbed the top of the bottle with alcohol before drawing the shot, and also swabbed the area where I gave it. I found the knot on the breast bone and went just to the side of it into the muscle. I hope I didn't do anything wrong. I watched a video of someone drawing a shot and giving it to a chicken, again, before I did it so I would be sure and do everything right. He believes that if we hadn't done that that he would have still been alive, but I don't.believe that. I'm just so sad and hurt. I've cried all day long, and poor Scarface is just lost, walking around hollering, looking for Henry. I'm now afraid to try to do anything to him about his face other than putting the Tetracycline in his water and hope and pray that it works. I truly thank you all for all your help, and I believe that the advise I got from all of you was excellent advice and had I gotten something done for him sooner, or found out sooner what to do and gotten up the courage to do it a week ago, he would probably be fine by now. Thank you all so very much, especially you Iain Utah! Thank you so very very much and God bless! So glad yours is doing better, and I hope she will soon be back to her same old self. God bless all! Harry

Beautiful goose Iain!! She is gorgeous and looks quite happy up on that bed. It's okay about the thread, I don't mind at all. It was really good to be able to discuss all of our troubled babies at the same time. So glad yours turned out great. I really am very happy about that.

Sorry I haven't posted something before now. I know you must have been wondering about what's going on with them, but I just have not been able to get on an do it. Just been crying and crying all day. Just now getting him buried.

I am so sorry for your loss!! Henry was obviously very ill. You did absolutely nothing wrong by giving him the shot. As hard as it may be, you should still catch Scarface and examine the lesions carefully. Once you can get that addressed, the best thing for Scarface is to find him a new companion. He is a pretty old gander and I worry about how hard this loss will be for him.

I am so sorry about Henry! However, you did not cause this to happen to him. I hope that you can get Scarface fixed up, and that he gets a nice companion or 2 to help him overcome his grief.
