My African geese (2 ganders) are sick what do I need?

Good idea about the blindfold. The Epernix that I have is the pour on type. It came in a large plastic bottle already mixed with a big dosage thing for cows. I used an eye dropper to do Scarface's drops on him Was going to use the same dropper for the chickens. Would it be sufficient to just dust the chicken house and put some DE and poultry dust in the nests instead of spraying anything in there? Didn't get a chance to get to him tonight. Going to be too late when my help gets back, so will have to get him tomorrow. Poor things. btw, what is an OEGB? Have no idea can't figure it out. I'm still not good with the acronyms and such on here or the twitterverse either or texting thing. At least I do know what lol is anyway and btw, and lmao and rotfl. That's about it.

I may try that baytril. I don't think I will be able to apply anything to his face or eye with a q-tip. He won't even let you look at it. He turns so he can see you at all times cause he can't see out of that eye. I have some of that Oxy stuff that you can mix and spray on chickens for virus and stuff like that. I have some mixed up. I didn't get the stuff you mix with it to activate it, so it's just the plain stuff. Supposed to be good, but I don't know how good if it's not activated, but that's for cleaning germs and virus from pens and stuff. You can't spray the activated stuff on any live thing, in fact you're not even supposed to breathe it, but unactivated your supposed to be able to mist your chickens and stuff like that to kill virus and germs. I was thinking the same thing about the ACV diluted and spraying in his eye. Seems like it would burn to me too. I do have the Tylan 50 I think is what it is. It's the injectable kind I think. Someone told me though not to change antibiotics so I don't know about spraying him with that while I'm still giving him the Tetracycline. Been giving it to him for a while now though and going to have to stop that soon before it's too long on it. don't know how long is too long though. May try spraying him with that oxy stuff. :)

Well, don't wait too long, cause it will just make it that much longer he has to be on it. If you could get someone to help you, I still think if someone hand feeds him while the other one mists his eye, with a mix of saline and antibiotic ointment, it might work. If you warm the spray bottle in hot running water til the contents are luke warm, and put the setting on fine mist, he probably won't even notice or think much about it. Phoenix just couldn't figure out if it was raining, and why rain just on his one foot.

The Baytril is a good one to have in your poultry first aid kit anyway, and lasts a long time.

OEGB is Old English game bantams. as for these antibiotic they are only suppose to be given for like 7-14 days depending on what your using.

Can you get Vetrycin for wounds and infection. TSC carries it you can spray that safely on his face and it will not hurt his eyes at all is very safe. I have sprayed it in my Brahmas eyes when she had bubbles and cleared it right up.

I think he will probably need antibiotic, either topical or baytril or both, to clear up the eye. They are hard to clear up when they get to that stage.

Diluted ACV to wash his eye would burn like crazy! Use eyewash if you use anything. If you can handle him enough or get close enough to him to put drops or gel in his eye, you can start with that, and it will probably help. Use triple antibiotic ointment without the pain killer in it. You could try to mix the ointment with eye wash or a little saline to make it easier to drop onto his eye. If you can use a qtip to apply around his eye, it will seep in. I used Veterycin on my peacock's toe, by feeding him with one hand, and misting his toe with the other. You might be able to get close to your gander's eye that way, as he sounds pretty tame. Otherwise, you could try what I did and just get the Baytril tabs, which you can easily conceal in a treat. They worked for Phoenix. There are several places you can order them on line ....
No, it doesn´t burn like crazy. All my birds have ACV in their water, and the geese pop their heads under no problems...no signs of 'burning'. It´s well diluted. It´s a natural treatment and works well, whether antibiotic is needed or not.
Baytril, of course, is easy to get and is good.

Is there no way you can put the treatment on him when he´s roosting? do you have access to him at night? He won´t know what´s happening.
You really need to treat as much area as poss to get on top of it.

Hmm..well that's interesting. We use ACV pretty regularly in the chicken's drinking water, so I guess that would make sense, I just never thought of it as an eye wash. But do you think it does a better job than regular eyewash or saline?

Is this still about that one goose who lived and the other died? That should be on the mend by now what is going on?
A delay in treatment. Hopefully it´ll get sorted soon.

Well, mine only got an eye problem once..a young gander some time ago. I diluted ACV in water, but some corn in the bottom of the bucket, and left him to it. He had no problem with the water, ate the corn. The next day he was fine, so now I do it from time to time, even though they´ve never had another problem. (The stream gets a bit mucky from time to time when the farmer further up does a hose-down, and they´re bound to pick up something..so, that´s what I do. Seems to work.)
