The crown on there almost exactly matches the crown on your platter!

Go to this website:
http://www.silvercollection.it/englishsilverhallmarksSHE.html

It has a bunch of Sheffield marks similar to the crown on your platter.

I think that your platter marks definitely have something to do with the Sheffield hallmarks...

And here's another picture:

The marks on this one (the last one on the top especially) look similar to the ones on your platter, if you look closely...looks kinda like a fancy cursive, backwards letter D maybe?)

I am sure that is british silver and the marks show the year and other things. That is what I have seen on the road show so don't sell it until you know what you have:)

Look closely at this picture:

The 11th row from the bottom that has 1787 has the same marking on it as your platter: It's the 3rd marking that looks like a cursive on the 11th row from the bottom. If you look closely at the markings on your platter, you will see that the 3rd marking matches it

It just amazes me- that little detail that they put into the work even back then to trace it's origins. That's so cool! You know- you buy something these days and it seems like everything is stamped "Made in China"
Well- where in China?
You can trace that platter back to the year, city, company and possibly even the silversmith that made it.

I used my PowerPoint to blow the photo of the marks up to 250%. It's still blurry but you can see the crown has 4 distinct "holes" where the arches are. I haven't found any crown markings as detailed as this one.

wow I see what you mean 77horses and I too cpould not find a matching crown exactly. But the S is very similar to the 1910 one. Also because of the detail in the crown I am more inclined to thnk it is from 19*10 then the 1700's or 1800's although that would be so awesome.

I am going to take a rub of the stamps and also some better pics and send a letter to all the main silver dealers in the main countries and see where what they say. in the meantime I will post a scan of the rubbing and the better pics of the stamps.

Thanks Everyone
