I think a good idea might be for a computer geek (like my husband, for example

) to design software that will interface orders with a weather forecasting program. The program can alert the hatchery of any orders that are scheduled to be shipped to any place that has a forecast of being outside of "safe temperature/weather parameters" and they can contact the customer to arrange for an alternate shipping date. They could even make it so that if the customer has ordered on-line, such an alert can be sent to them via e-mail. While not always accurate, sites like Weatherchannel.com will make predictions as far as a week in advance.

Sorry for the loss, that is sad. I ordered this year from Ideal Poultry and my entire order made the trip just fine, but lost 3 frizzles the following day. They (Like McMurry) will replace the lost ones. Ideal is in Texas (I'm in California) so not too bad of a trip weather wise. I've always ordered from McMurry but thought I'd try Ideal this year and was quite happy.

I have an order coming in Friday from Ideal, and they have always shipped my chicks in a box ful of Straw for cusion and warmth. we are in the 40s here where im at hopefully they might make it.

I did a lot of reading about shipping from different hatcheries and looked for the best shipping policies. Ideal was the best and I felt assured that my shipment would be fine even in winter. This is the first time I ordered being a newbe and all. This statement came from Ideal.


Boxing(All poultry will be boxed according to the weather, so the poultry will have the best chance of survival.)

This put my mind at ease thinking the hatchery would be looking out for their product and my wellfare. This to me is misleading after what I have read in this tread. John

Terribly sorry for your loss. :aww They should stop selling chicks if they're going to keep this up. I really hope the next batch will make it......... You have my prayers.

Aw, I'm not offended if ya'll were talking to me... lol

I agree with everything everyone has said... it's not the usps fault. It's not the hatcheries' fault (love the idea of the computer software that links weather forcast), and it's not the fault of people who don't know any better. But at the end of the day, these are live animals that arrived dead. That's a tragedy, in my opinion. What can be done?

I contacted MM's and post-poned the babies trip to be the first weekend in March. The sad thing is they don't ship out until Saturday's, the lady says the post office can't handle all the boxes. Hopefully we will have better weather then. Thanks again everyone.

mthrclckr, I like your idea, and I would think it would help everyone! Just keep thinking.
