Yes they seem to do that, I moved them out for an hour while I added 2 feet to the height of the crate I had my girls in with chicken wire to keep them in. they are now in a 2x4x4.5 foot brooder with 4 perches. But they are quickly out growing that addition. If the weather in New Hampshire would cooperate I could finish their new coop

Mack, I am in North Carolina. Do you think it is safe to put 3 week old pullets outside this time of year? They will have a nice, secure, draft-free coop, and I am getting a red heat lamp to put in it.

Or should I keep the inside still?

I'm not sure I recieved my chicks from Ideal on Oct 22 so I've only been raising them for a little longer than you have been. I'm pretty sure that there is a reply to that question somewhere on this site

Its recommended that you lower temp by 5 degrees a week till feathered out at which time they can keep themselves warm, so as long as you can maintain area they are in at proper temp they can be wherever you want them.

I put the little ladies out over the weekend. I boarded up the screens on the henhouse to keep warmth in, and I put the infrared heat lamp, and also a heating pad in the coop. I also bought a cheap thermometer and stuck it in, so I can see how cold the coop gets at the coldest time of day (or rather, night.)

They seem to really love being out there. So far I have not let them out of the little enclosed run yet. They are still too small for that. :-)

Well, I made a tough decision this past weekend. I decided that I really couldn't keep 8 hens. It was too many. I had originally figured for 6. So I found a lady on craigslist looking for hens, and contacted her.

I gave her two of my pretty ladies. One of the Ameracaunas and one of the White Leghorns. In exchange, she is going to give me 1 or 2 butchered roos. She got roos by mistake when she wanted hens. She can butcher them herself, apparently.

I think that I can afford to give 6 hens the time, care, space, and good food they deserve easier than I can do for 8.

Oh I just went out to close them into the henhouse, and when I peeked in, they were all up on the roosting bar together. It's the first time I've seen them all get up there together.

Got some new pictures!

Lola, perched on the shower rod, awaiting wing-clippage. She looks a bit anxious, doesn't she? She can't figure out why she's in the house again, probably.

Lola, after being clipped, getting comfort from her Mom. This is her favorite place in the whole world. She'd be purring, if chickens could purr.

"You're adopted."
"No, YOU are!"

"One of us is adopted, right mom?"

"It's not what it looks like, mom, honest!" Logan and Tygre, inspecting the clipped feathers.

Thanks!

It's so funny, I had Lola in my lap a little while later, on the couch. The kittens' mother came over to me, and the moment she saw Lola, her pupils instantly expanded so far that her eyes looked black. She hunkered down, and began stalking. It was like, one look at a "prey" animal sent her instantly into predator mode. And she's a sweet little kitty!

Do you know what kind Lola is? I had thought she was an Ameracauna, but now I'm thinking maybe she's one of the Barred Plymouth Rocks.
