I have had a rat problem so I had been keeping my baby geese in a small hardware cloth cage with 1/2 inch spaces at night not only were they in there but this cage was inside another cage suspended about 5 feet off the ground attached to my chain link duck pen, the cage it was inside of was a dog kennel completly covered with chicken wire which houses my chickens. Last night I heard them screaming so I ran out to check on them. I picked up my brown chinese gosling only to find him alive and alert but with his whole bill gone. All that was left was his little tongue, he also had one good leg left and the other was just dangling by a piece of skin. This image will forever be imprinted on my mind. I loved that little goose. He was peeping at me and looking me right in the face begging me to save him but I just couldn't. I held him and cried for about an hour while he slept on my chest and looked me in the eyes he even scooted up so he could rest under my chin. In his eyes I was his mom he followed me everywhere. I finally got up the courage to euthanize him. I'm about to go set some rat traps. This is the most terrible thing I have ever seen in my entire life I just couldn't believe he was alive and otherwise healthy...I'm happy his white chinese brother was unharmed.
Here is a pic of my little man just earlier that day...He is the little brown chinese gosling.
