your hens will make great broody mamas.
If you sign the kids up for the APA youth program you can find some really good breeders willing to work with you.

sorry you didn't get what you wanted it reflects badly on the rest of us

Sorry for the mess you are in, and I hope it doesn't discourage you're kids from their 4-H project. I agree that they are a Cochin Cross. The good news is that they all appear to be pullets. If you only paid $5.00 a piece for them, if you decide not to keep them, you should be able to recover your up-front cost easily on Craig's List. Maybe the breeder will take them back, but I would not get my replacement birds from them. Once burned . . .

This is my Bantam Blue Cochin, Bella Blue. She is "Showable", in that she has no disqualifying faults. But that does not necessarily mean she is "Quality". She has great type and carriage, good foot feathering and underfluff, correct foot and shank color, and nice 'lacing' on the feather tips. But one thing that she would be marked down for at a show is her feathering - the feather tips of the primaries and secondaries should all be lined up in neat rows - her's are all over the place.

I think I can see some feathering on the feet. If they have yellow on the bottom of their feet, I would have to guess they are hatchery cochins or culls, which may or may not ever meet the standard. In this case, SQ refers to you are looking for birds that at least meet the standard of perfection and don't have faults and can be shown without being dq'd. In other cases, SQ may mean they have already won in a show. Lots of people use it different ways. Good luck in getting what you want.

one has nice feathering on her feet. and a softer tail. not super nice but they are cute I may end up keeping them just because I love the blue and the kids love them....
here is a few more pics just for the heck of it....and WOW some of you have really nice birds...

thank you everyone, and I know that sometimes people just make mistakes. who know's maybe the person who sold them too me was new to the cochin world too.....

Just in case the OP needs the clarification, SQ stands for Show Quality while PQ stands for Pet Quality.

I don't have kids, so I can't experience the disappointment they may have at not being able to show those birds for 4-H, but those are REALLY nice PQ birds!

Awww, that kinda sucks. But remember, just because they're not pure, they're still YOUR chickens. Keep em', get a refund if you wish, but keep em'.

I also suggest you do not buy birds from other people and show them as your own, breed a line first or even a few generations. Calling someone else's hard work your own just doesn't seem right to me.

we are new to this. We show horses and rabbits. My kids were drawn to the poultry barn all week long at the 4-H fair and fell in love with the chickens. So, we now have a small back yard flock ( we have had them for only 2 months) I dont know anyone who shows chickens so Im kinda on my own here. I dont want to show up with chickens that I didnt breed. Is that how this all works or do people BUY nice chickens and SHOW them? I mean Im not doing it for a living its all in good healthy 4-H fun.My post was not ment to offend anyone i was just looking for some help as to weather or not a had a roo and was told my chickens were not what I thought they were. I'm not able to keep collecting chickens. I only have 1 acre in town and cant "press" my luck. SO that being said will it be a problem if we show up with nice show birds that WE DIDNT breed, for my kids to show at the local 4 -H fair... I mean who do breeders sell their birds too if not for people to show? I dont know enough to just breed some chickens and call it good. SO for this next season I should start slow and go from there... right??? and we will keep the birds, i dont care about the 15 bucks, the 2 hr drive ,or the fact that I was miss led what I care about is that these birds are now taking up space and I have very little of that.I would love to have 100 but I cant. Im not lucky enough to have that kind of property.THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who has helped me I really appreciate it...
