My beautiful d'Uccle roo was almost killed by a dachsund

not sure where you are.... if there is a farm store or feed mill near you, they often have various antibiotics for treatment. Trick is to find the right one. Sometimes staff will have an idea of which would be best. I"m suggesting this because it is usually cheaper than antibiotics from vets. You could also see what is available, and then just ask the vet which would be better for this situation and most vets will give you that answer over the phone for free.

I would give him crushed fresh garlic - finely chop a bulb up with something that appeals to him (cold cereal, fruit, greens, noodles, whatever) and get as much garlic into him as you can. It has some qualities that will help him til you can get some antibiotics.

Also, if you know whose dog that is, call the owner up and ask for repayment of vet bills. Even if the person won't pay up, you are putting them on notice to keep their g.d. dog away from your animals.

Hang in there!

We're in TN, and no co-ops or ag places are open today.

No leash laws in my area. The dog had as much right to run free as my chickens. Yes, they were on my property, but still no real legal recourse.
Also, I've never seen this dog before. There have been a lot of pets dumped in the area recently. So it may've just been passing through.

I think dried garlic has more antibiotic properties than fresh, but a dose of both won't hurt. I'll double-check that. They get dried garlic in their treat foods regularly.
The next treat will be oatmeal made with honey & cinnamon, though. Those are also recommended natural 'restoratives'.

Will give him some garlicky eggs for dinner.
This morning was actually the first time he's ever eaten egg. He's always avoided it in the past. So I was very pleased to see him eat it!!!

we don't have leash laws where I live, either - same problems with dumped animals. We have the right to shoot animals interfering with our "livestock" - when a dog from a farm down the road wiped out my flock I let them know I had a 22, and since then I havne't seen that dog around. Not to say that I would shoot it, because I also think my responsibility is to protect the flock from predators, including dogs, but...I did notice that they keep a better eye on their dog.

I hadn't heard that dried garlic was better than fresh garlic - seems counterintuitive.

Hang in there, Lori!!!!

Well, him crowing up a storm to let you know he is there sounds like a great sign to me.

I'm so glad to hear his eye seems to be ok and not swollen shut anymore. That's a great sign!

Are his girls pecking at his wounds at all?

DH will get over a few chicken feathers in the house. I think he knows he'll be in even more trouble if he didn't let you do all that you can to save your other favorite man. LOL!!!!!

My DH doesn't like it either or them even being in the garage, but I just ignore him. LOL!!!! You know I've had my fair share in the house for one reason or another.

I had to bring Napoleon in last night to check out his frost bitten comb. This extreme weather has done a job on it even w/ it slathered w/ Bag A Balm.

Miles comes in regularly. Then there was Brownie that had Bumblefoot that I had to treat, Rosemary that was an internal layer, Grady was molting and looked like a little rat, so the other girls were pecking her shiny new feathers, same w/ Sunshine. Never a dull moment around here. Oh yea, DD brought one of the turkeys inside the other day, but DH wasn't here to see that. THANK GOODNESS!!!!!

You're a great chicken momma!!!!!

If the vet gives you a hard time then e-mail Dr. Brown for advice.

Hang in there and keep us posted!!!!!!

Garlic has different properties according to it's forms.
I know that when I was originally reading up on homeopathic meds, dried garlic was a natural anti-fungal while fresh garlic is not. And roasting it releases a whole different set of chemical compounds. Garlic is neat stuff. We eat a lot of it at our house, in all it's forms!

Yes, DH is being pretty patient about the rooster in the house. I'm not known for following rules anyway

Just enough to preserve peace in the household.

And DH knows TN is my baby. I can snap my fingers and TN jumps up onto the 'chicken bench' for me to pick him up. And he poses so prettily for pictures when I ask him to. So if I decide to take him to the vet there will be grumbling and then DH will go with me. And he'll gently mock me, but then have to turn his head and not watch while TN is examined. (been there, done that, with Callie-cat last year)

I'm afraid I will ultimately want to take him to a vet because he may need flesh trimmed from around his eye. I'm not sure I'm up to that. But need to get antibiotics into him first and see if that makes a difference in the swelling and eye tissue.

Yeah, we had Thing 1 in the garage when she got beat up by Rusty Roo. And DH himself built a holding pen in the garage for the whole crew when we got down to single digits. DH is a sweetie inside a tough-guy shell.

At noon I'll take TN's ladies outside for some exercise, but am keeping him contained. And I'll keep watch for little yappy dogs. Strange to have seen a coyote in my yard in broad daylight, countless hawks, but the only injuries from an external flock source came from a weiner dog. Glad my cat ran it off!! Nobody messes with Jezebel...

He's doing well, all things considered. It made him crazy that the little girls got to go outside and not him. So I took him to the sheltered area of the yard and let him get some air and sunshine. He flapped and crowed and scratched around. When he thought he should race across the yard to beat up Fozzy Frizzle I decided to bring him back in!

That he feels like challenging our other roo seems like a good sign. Chasing Fozzy around the yard is TN's favorite past time.

He got more protein for dinner, plus fresh electrolyte water. He can definitely still see out of the bad eye. The swelling looks a bit less, but that may be my imagination. I plan to wash it out again later and put more ointment on it.

He was very glad to see the little girls come back inside. They're all nested down and resting.

Thanks for checking on us, Kim!

It sounds like TN is feeling much better, esp if he wanted to chase Fozzy around the yard. LOL!!!!

I am so glad he is doing better!!!!! Sounds like he is going to be just fine, but needs a little time for wounds to heal.

I'll keep checking in for updates.
Kim
