My black copper maran finally started laying

Hi! My black copper maran finally started laying today! What would you all grade the color? I know there is a scale that i had saved before but i can’t find it now.

Somewhere in the 4-6 range. Difficult to rate on a computer which is why people buy the paper scale.

Hi there, that's a beautiful egg!

I used to breed Marans... so for informational purposes only like to share that Marans is ALWAYS said with the "s" at the end even when referring to only one... after the french town they hail from.

Also, while it's fun just for comparison purposes... the average shade of the egg laid is not considered true until about the 20th egg. First eggs are often much darker than the bird will level off to be..

Compared to my own I would say a dark 4 or maybe 5. But, as mentioned above, it’s hard to tell through a picture.

thank you so much for the info i had no idea bout the s or the 20 egg thing i have 5 other chickens all hatched the same time as her which Was last Feb so i was excited to finally get one! Haha. The others have been laying for months already.
