My broody hatched silkie eggs!!

hey, those are some adorable chicks, as long as they are sheltered at night and not out in the 20 degree weather you should be fine, i dont put heat on my chicks that are with broodies unless they have alot of chicks, usually when i have a hen go broody i put about six under them and whatever other eggs are layed on that day and the day after go in the bator, and then when they all hatch i give them back to the mom, so ive had bantam cochins raise 20 chicks at a time, and in a case like that, i put heat on them, cuase there isnt enough room under the broody

i jsut had a white cochin hen go broody today and she is cracking me up she is only on 5 eggs but she is stretched out in her nest and she looks like a pancake with a head or like a flounder, and i put 12 eggs in the bator today as well, so in 3 weeks i will have babies too

Hey Carolynb....
THOSE ARE THE CUTEST CHICKS !!! Momma is also very pretty. If you live in Raynham,MA....I live right nearby....and I'm going to dress up in a big chicken suit and come and steal that little black one ! Heh heh Love em !

Sweet Cheeks, Momma does let me pick them up. She seems a lot calmer now that the chicks have hatched. When she was sitting on the eggs she would peck if we got too close.

austinhart123, they are in a cage within the coop that is draft free. The coop is not insulated, do you think that is sufficient? I appreciate any input on this

Thanks, Goldendoodles!! You probably do need a silkie or two...or 5!!! They are so sweet, beautiful and from what I've read make excellent broodies! They also look SO funny when they run...it's one of the cutest things I have ever seen.

ya that should be sufficient, im a baby here in so cal and if its under 6oF everyone gets a heat lamp, but im sure your birds are more accustomed to the cold than mine, and broodies usually carry a higher body temp anyways

What beautiful little silkie babies! I've never had any silkies, but I love the coloring on yours!

And the state you live in is plenty to keep us CA people out, so your chickies are safe. You won't find us coming to Alaska in the winter time. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Thanks, new2chooks!! I'm not really from Alaska, it was a joke to poultrypatch because she was going to steal my little black silkie!! I am in MA

Yes, Carolynb.....
Be VERY alert and on the look out for that "giant" chicken. She'll be about 5'6" and carrying a hot water bottle to keep that adorable little black Silkie warm. YOU didn't really think I was fooled with the "Alaska" story did you ? Saw right through you !
Seriously, been "dreaming of Silkies" in the spring. Do you hatch them for resale ???? Just thought if I can't nab that little guy in my chicken suit I MAY have to resort to buy one...or two....or four...or five....who knows ?? It's endless ! LOL Hey....I shop at Ventura Grain in Taunton...perhaps the little black Silkie can meet me there ??
