I have a cat that's about 13 years old. She's my sweet, eccentric kitty that will let me know when it's time for me to go to bed among other odd behaviors. We've got the goslings outside in a dog run. At night, I usher them all into the dog crate that's in the run and lock them up. They also have a heat lamp on them to keep away the chill. This has been the set-up for them for the last 4 nights. Two days ago, at about 5 am or so, my cat has awakened my husband with a screaming yowl as if she's in a cat fight. She'll be sitting at the back door staring towards the gosling's run and screaming.

DH was none to thrilled about the rude awakening, to say the least! Personally, I don't think she's yelling at the goslings. I told DH that I think she sees something and by the time he jumps out of bed to investigate it, whatever was out there is gone. I'll be getting a trap pretty soon and I'm hoping to catch whatever she feels threatened by out there.
Either she's screaming at a possible predator or she's gotten so old that she's seeing things.

I'll go with yowling for no good reason. Mine go through spells of it. I'm with your husband, not enjoying it at night.

13 isn't really that old... maybe there was another cat outside that was attracted by the goslings?

She's the oldest living cat I've ever had. All of my cats have always been inside/outside cats so, unfortunately, they are met with some sort of tragedy or another. A couple of years ago I felt that since she made it this far that she could be a full time inside cat if she wanted.

I did find out last night what's been getting her wound up. I just so happened to be in the living room keeping an eye on the brooder when I saw something move out on the back deck. My cat, Miss Fit, saw it too and she starting meowing and scratching at the door. The moment I stood up, a stray cat shot off the deck. Between the stray cats out here and skunks, I do believe my trap will be used a lot this summer!
